thanks for that whitebeam. i think the thickness could be an issue where taps are and door frames so in this instance would you recommend using backerboard? or does that have to be the same thickness anyway?
if its in a bathroom/shower room you could use '**** panals' which are 12.5mm thick from wickes, you can tile straight on to these

The rule is that 9.5 can be used on studs up to 400mm centres whereas 12.5 can go up to 600mm centres, ie cielings on roof trusses. Having said that 9.5 is pretty flimsy and I reckon you should always try to use 12.5, it gives a much sturdier wall.
