seal guard sealants aerosol

hi all,has anyone used this product to impregnate porcelain tiles and if so what were there veiws on it? i ask as the job im on i asked the customer for sealant as they are adamant they want to supply the adhesives etc and this is what they gave me ,,never used it b4 so i wanted a proffesionals oipinion on it cheers

To seal porcelain then you need porcelain impregnator..something like lithofin fz protective impregnator and seen as sealguard is a topical type sealer then no i would not use it on porcelain tiles but as a grout sealer then yes it is spot on........

hi dave ,yes i thought as much its just really a mist spray sealant for grouts isnt it, a wee bit misleading as it says its grout and tile sealant but when you read the info on it it just says it doeasnt harm tiles,does most porcelain just take absorb one coat of sealant so to speak,,its less porous than stone etc?

Yes..one coat will usually suffice on most porcelain tiles..........

okay i shall advise the customer this is not suitable for the porcelain tiles she wants,is it always best to seal tiles 1st before laying i assume,

Work cleanly whilst laying and then seal before grouting........porcleain tiles have microscopic open pores and the dirt grabs into these so it's best to seal before grouting...........not all porcelain needs sealing though...mainly just the unglazed type...........

This contradicts Sealguard themselves. I spoke to them last Friday about the use of this product and they clearly stated that it can be used for sealing both tiles and grout. This was there technical department and not the receptionist. I have also sent a mail to them asking for clarification on its uses, so that this confusion can be cleared up. I'll let you all know when I get a response.

Bobbin it does seal tiles and grout but it doesnt seal porcelain as far as i know,just looked at the tin it says "seals marble ,granite and terracotta"could not see any mention of porcelain.

I used this product and yes it seals the grout ( at least I think it does as it cleans up nice when the kids have been using hair dye etc) but seal the tiles? - I don't think so. I gave my problem wall plenty of applications - couldn't see the point in having half a tin left - so I would guess at at least 3 coats. The problem bottom row of tiles are still a problem. To be honest I would not use this again - well not the spray can anyway.

I am sorry I don't care what Sealguard Technical department said!!! Any spray applicated sealant is lower end of the market. It can never work as well as a liquid applied penetrative sealer. Even Aqua Mix admit that

A lot of it is lost in the atmosphere before it even gets to the surface. It is designed to quickly seal grout which is 20 times more porous than any porcelain

i found this when i sealed poliished porcelain with seal guard it evaporated off the tile so fast i found fila mp 90 worked far better for this application seal guard sealer has got its uses just not for sealing porcelain in my opinion

yes i got feed the same crap at my local tile clearing house in prestonone can of seal guard was about £28 got told it sealed grout and the tiles and i also got told it sealed up to 20 m2 ye right id stay away from it

Apologies for the delay in replying.

I am surprised to hear there is some confusion out there regarding the use of our product as like you say on the product label it clearly show what the product can be used for.

I can confirm the product can be used just for sealing grout which would be pertinent if you are for example you were installing a tile that did not need sealing such as a glazed ceramic but you still wanted to protect the grout.

Seal_Guard can also be used to seal virtually any type of natural stone including of course polished marble.

We recommend 2 coats and wait at least 20 minutes between each coat.

i used this about 12 months ago to seal some 100x100 travertine, i thought it made them look really shiney, would'nt use it again, customer loved the look though, think i'v git pixs somewhere, how do i put them on here???

If your sealing Porcelain its best to use the Seal Guard Porcelain & Stone Impregnator for less pourous surfaces.

test the porcelain with a whiteboard marker. A small dot in the corner will do. If it rubs off its not neccessary to seal. But if it doesnt then seal with sealguard liquid, leave to dry, whatever the drying time is then seal again after grouting.

between each coat it can be buffed to remove any shine.....

If your using the Gold Label Impregnator (1 Litre Liquid) or the aerosol which is the same formula as the Gold Label it is best to buff after the second coat using a bit of the product on whatever your using to buff it with. Apply the second coat after twenty minutes.

The Porcelain & Stone Impregnator requires far less buffing and is specifically formulated for Porcelain and polished stone. Basically less pourous surfaces. All the products should never effect the natural look.
