    Default Kitchen Floor pain!!

Have just been to see a kitchen floor that the woman wants tiles layed in, its 9m2 and is plyed out already. She told me she is wanting cable UFH aswell and what would i charge to lay just the tiles, i said id take £300 including addy, grout, silicone etc which all in the materials equals £75 so really am only taking £225 for laying the tiles (£25 per m2). However if she wanted me to lay the UFH cable then it would be an aditional £80 as it wouldnt take me a whole day to lay but would take about 4 hours or so by the time ive primed etc but all in 2/3 days work. The long and short is that she reconed that was very expensive and is wanting me to talk it over with her husband!!

Am i asking over the odds or is the world gone nuts and wanting everthing for free.????

Sounds a good price to me. I walk away from jobs with people like that; they put me off (living).

What do they think a "reasonable" price is???

Well if the ground work is done for you and your on ply then instal the heating takes 4 hrs 9m2 should take a day finished so I would say your 2/3 days is a bit on the heavy side, at a day rate of 120 well your looking at around £310 I would of thought.

Had a local tile shop call me today and asked if i wanted any work, i said I'm a bit busy for a few weeks, but after that i said i could fit them in...I asked what they pay per metre and they said we only pay day rate and not per metre, its a really good day rate they said...How much i asked, they replied £80 per day, i said double it then i might be interested . I quoted a pretty big house a while back, about 120m2, gave a tasty price of 2K and didnt even hear from them again. So if you got undercut by 3K what where you working it out at per m or by dayrate for fiddly work.

there is always someone out there who will be willing to undercut your quote. ie 'the man down the road cousins friend '. It depends on your customer, are they the kind of people who just want a cheap price and a cheap job or are they willing to pay more for quality ????

I feel sorry for the tiler who has taken this on at that price!!!
He's either really really good at tiling or really really bad at pricing

Think the price's vary quite a bit Davie depending on where u are in Scotland. In Falkirk it's roughly about £20m2 but some guy's are as low as £10

It depends on what you are tiling though dosent it.

£10 a sqm might not sound much, but if it's the kind of job where you can get 3 or 4 sqm an hour down then it's not bad money is it.

If someone had already had a quote from a new tiler who's still slow, but the floors quite big, say 25 sqm, but it's just mainly laying them down with little cutting, but the newbie tilers looked at it and thought "oh my god it's big, must be 4 days work for me", then quoted a day rate of £110 a day x 4 -£440, then you come along, know it'll take you 2 days absolute max and quote £300

It all comes down to what the job is and your own speed.

I suppose it's how quiet and needy you are for the work too.

Any money is better than no money, so I can understand how many get undercut, so working for £70 a day is far better than having no work at all for them, but just not good for people like us.

Though there will always be idiots who just want to do everything and quote silly low money to get the jobs.
