Hi

I would like to mention something that I feel is relevant to all you guys who have recently or are about to undertake tiling training. In my local area there has been an influx of newbie tilers leaving their cards at tile shops. Many of these tilers have a logo on their cards ( PTS or something like that )
The comment I hear frequently made by the guys behind the counter & other established tilers is " oh , just another guy who has been on a course who thinks he can tile" This is not my view, just an observation.
In my opinion anyone newly trained would be better off leaving the logo off their cards & giving the impression that they have been tiling for a couple of years. Customers & tile shops could not care less whice course you have been on - Customers just want a good job done. Shops seem to have an inherrent mis-trust of guys who have just come off the Tile Training conveyor belt.
I am not trying to say that they have not received proper training - no doubt they have.
This is just an observation, no offence meant.

Well said matey. To the tile shops an 'approved by XXXXX training centre' isn't worth much. That's very good bloody advice mate. Ta for that.

Good advice.

Some people I know have been bending the truth slightly when asked how long they have been trading & tiling for....... simply for the reasons mentioned - People don't trust the line of new tilers / plasters which are coming out of short courses and want to know that they are paying for quality workmanship.

Spot on Leather, I think its more of a marketing ploy by PTS to get their own name about, not many people will have even heard of PTS, nothing wrong in bending the truth a bit to say how long you have been tiling, to the tile shops as said above if people think you have just started they will form an impression straight away and its usually not a good one. All you need to do is make your business card look very professional and let people make their own minds up from that

Some trainning centers brain wash us newbies into thinking that we can come "professional" in a matter of weeks,,,the course i went on was utter crap,,,but the sad thing is i spent alot of money to try and make a go of things on my own as a tiler ...so unfortunately i have no choice but to stick at it and do my best!!....and i will !!!!!
get your setting out right and the right adhesives and good quality tools ..also take pride in your work ...surely you won't go far wrong

Hello HomeTiler,

Hope you stick at it and it works out for you. Who did you do your course with? as I'm going down the same route once I finish work. If you don't want to name and shame, I can understand, but geographical location would give us all a clue.
