city and guilds?

Hi, Im looking at doing a tiling course and 1 I have seen costs a grand but you dont get anything with it apart from a form saying you completed the training where as the other I have seen cost a little more but i will gain an city and guilds cert from it. Is the city and guilds worth paying more for and an extra week of training? Is it well recognised.

the city and guilds was the trade standard industry qualification but you had to work for a company and attend college day release for around 3-4 yrs and they you did your city and guilds advanced craft certificate which was another 1 yr....

its all nvq assesment now which is the industry standard qualification. As far as i am aware, the city and guilds is not as high as the nvq in its current format . i would ring one of the training centers on here to get some advice because the last thing you want to do is pay 2 grand, for a course with a certificate which means nothing in the real world........ask plenty of questions because in this day and age, its important to get those answers before you hand over any money whatsoever mate

If I was you mate i'd do the city and guilds if you have both the money and time. I say this simply because you are far better off having a properly recognised certificate to show your compitance rather than the EDI certificate which is most likely what you'd get with other training courses, you prop ain't heard of it either . So i'd say make the extra effert if you can. Your next step is to gain the NVQ2 but you need on site assesment for that, so go self employed and build up your skills and portfolio, then apply for the NVQ2. Good luck.

Just for the record as well, EDI is a major awarding body in the UK just not as mainstream as others that you may have herd of.

It is not just endorsed qualifications that they award, they also award a wide range of NVQs / SVQs.

The reason that private training organisations use companies like this is to get very short intensive courses recognized in some way, so that the standard of training is monitored and verified, it also enables students who are attending shorter courses to be awarded a recognized certificate as opposed to one that is printed up in the back office.

Thank you Danny, I was under the inpression that i would gain a recognised cert out of a 2 week course with STC but it seems i would be paying for nothing. I think my next move is to try and get a labouring job with a tiler and gain experience that way. I just hope there is someone near basildon willing to take me on in this current climate.

I think you would be better doing a course than labouring on a gang of tilers

you cant replace an apprenticeship with an intensive course, but a course will give you the basics to build on

a lot of successfull tilers on here started on intensive courses
