Hi everyone,

I am thinking of changing careers and getting into tiling.
Obviously I need to attend a training course, but there are so many.
Any ideas who are the best providers

How long should a course should I go for
1 week
2 weeks
6 week course

Costs - how do I know if I am getting value for money
Will I learn as much on a 4 week as a six so is it worth paying the extra

Can anyone offer any advise please

Seriously think first. I attended a course last year and it was first class, info great, teaching good, a sound grounding and value for money. BUT Training centres are churning out tilers by the shedfull, and the trade is about saturated in certain areas, you just have to look at the 'new tilers' hellos in this forum. competition for work is hard and getting harder. Unless your prepared to be agressive in selling yourself, put in long hours marketing and be able to survive for periods with not much work it's not as rosy as it first seems. Having said that being self employed can be very satisfyiny

Hello mate,be very careful which course you do choose as with myself,took a 3day course and it was not up to scratch,there are excellent courses out there mate,just take your time and get as much info as poss,good luck,Dean

I'm gonna do the NETT course hopefully next month.

Make sure the course you do is accredited by an recognised awarding body.

2 reasons for this:

1. You know you are getting the right training.
2. You can use the certificate towards gaining your NVQ2.

Be aware of 'training centres' that say they can get you your NVQ if you do their course. They are talking rubbish and are using this as a marketing tool to pull punters in to do their expensive courses.

Fact of the matter is, you can only do your NVQ at a Construction Skills / City & Guilds accredited centre AFTER you have done an APPROVED training programme recognised by the QCA (unless you have a minimum of 3 years experience).

These are the guidlines set out by City & Guilds at present for NVQ's.

Think of it like this - get a random driver to help you learn to drive, then do your driving test. IT AINT GOING TO HAPPEN!! Get a qualified driving tutor to help you learn, your chances are almost 100% to pass!!

TIME AND TIME AGAIN WE GET CALLS FROM 'TILERS' HERE, THAT ARE HAVING DREAMS SMASHED BY REALITIES BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN TRICKED INTO BELEIVING THAT THE EXPENSIVE NON ACCREDITED COURSE THEY DID WILL QUALIFY THEM FOR AN NVQ STRAIGHT AWAY!!
