Read this site's recommendations on choosing a course.

I was considering PTS in Harlow until I read the 'What To Look Out For' section
warning of tile company lectures included in courses and business set-up included in courses as these can be gained free of charge from tile companies and banks, so why waste your money on a course and pay for something that you can get for free anyway.

Well, I see all the above is included in the PTS course too and this has now put me off.

I live in Essex and would value your experience in choosing the right course for my area.

Does anyone know or recommend a genuine tiling course that does not waste time offering to set you up with £500-£1000 busniess accounts with tile companies that you can get anyway and lectures from tile company salesmen who would give you the same one to one for free just by giving them a call, and just deals with hands on tiling and no side gimmicks as explained.

Did my training at PTS Warrington. Thought is was very good, though I didn't really need the business start up stuff. If you don't want to sit through it ask Mark Humphries if you can spend your time practising - using nippers for instance - or other stuff. They are very approachable. They do the business start up as a service ,if you don't need it, don't do it. My experience of sitting through it was that most of the people thought it was worthwhile as they had no idea where to start.

I am happy to recommend them.

It's ok for them to point you in the right direction but just ask all the centres how long they are physically training you and how long you're with somebody other than the teacher (meaning those types of 'talks' from suppliers etc) and make up your own mind.

Lots of the courses will spend time on making sure you're not going out there whilst you're not ready in not tiling terms, so they might give advice on good banks, good associations and their benefits, good suppliers etc etc but generally when they are passing your details on to suppliers for sales purposes, that's just something you don't need to pay for at a training centre, or at all in some cases.

PTS does have lots of good feedback though, just search around and compare to make sure it's right for you that's all.

The comments were mainly aimed at those who do a short course for X amount and then a longer course for XX amount and actually you're doing very little extra, you just seem to be stuck infront of Reps and Sales team members of various organisations and suppliers, and that's just wrong.

As an addition to my note above, the only "rep" we saw on our course (4 wks) was the owner of "Kwiksplit" who imports and distributes Montolit products. Even then we saw him over the lunch period. Never saw anyone else "pushing" products. The rest of the time was viable lectures regarding substrates, addy's grouts and tile materials i.e ceramic natural products and porcelain oh, and the business start up of which I have commented already. Only real issue I had was that the close at the end of the day was quite rigidly kept to, though the place was usually open well before 8 in the morning for practice time.

Ok, thanks for the reply's.

Having done a fair bit of tiling over the years (just my own DIY)
and enjoying the results, I thought I would take up one of these courses and take a (very) early retirement package in a year and maybe change my career.
I had seen PTS and looked into their website and thought it sounded right of all the places offering tiling courses. I only came across this site today or yesterday now, and read the Tiling news page: Searching for a Tiling Course? : Tiling News and read the info written, obviously I read to much into it.

To wivers, i'll take you up and give you a call if that's ok, thanks.
