    Default Drill sizes?

Hello all and thanks again for the great welcome.

I have a job to do fixing various bits on a recently fitted porcelain tiled bathroom, I have never fixed through porcelain before and was after some advice, I have been pricing drills and hole cutters in all the usual diy sheds and the prices vary enormously as you are well aware of, I have been reading all the advice you give on drills and I am thinking of using 365.
The advice please, is it best to drill a slightly oversize hole through the tile and then use a standard masonary bit into the wall behind( i am thinking about the spread on the rawlplug maybe splitting the tile?) also could I use a say 8mm drill instead of using a 6mm and a 8mm as the fittings will cover the holes ?

    Thanks for your help.

Hope I have not confused you with the 6mm/8mm bit, I have both size screws to fit and would like to use just one drill for both, sorry for any confusion.

As with all tools, you tend to get what you pay for. I havent used the 365 drills as yet but fom what ive read so far they will be my next purchase.

I would use the 8mm for sure, keep it wet and it will extend the life no end. I tap the rawlplug through surface of the tile into the wall, that way it wont crack the tile! You can as you say use a smaller masonry/sds bit in the wall behind.

Thanks for getting back so quick Scottley and really appreciate the advice, with these tiles being over a tenner each I dont want to crack to many

    Thanks again.

the same with ceramics, push the rawlplug throught tile and it wont crack, unless of course you tighten the screws too much!

I have cracked ONE tile in the last 9 years and that was a fat rawlplug that came with a Mira shower riser kit that couldnt be pushed throught tile.

The best advice is to treat yourself the Bathroom Fitters Kit which has a mix of

6mm and 8mm cores to diamond drill holes for hard tiles.

    6MM

    8MM

Ordering the Bathroom Fitters Kit gives you a taste of the two sizes and from that you can determine which you prefer.

If you then need to go and order further pack then both the 6mm and the 8mm are available as seperate packs to the bathroom fitters kits.

Both the 6mm and 8mm are available as single packs OR as part of the BFKMX

    Thanks for the order Rob.

To answer your question about 10mm 12mm 14mm sizes then yes the 16mm is useful for these.

    See example

Basically you drill a 16mm plug out of the tile and that will let you slip the tile over things like 10mm bolts for toilet pans, 12mm and 14mm fisher fixing kits to hang sinks.

I even recommend drilling a 30mm hole for a fisher fixing kit but only doing it AFTER the tile is fitted to the wall. That way with a 30mm hole you wont hit the tile with the masonary drill when you put the 14mm plug into the bricks behind. And same with stud timber.

    Richard,
I can understand why you get such good feedback on this forum, your service is second to none, the advice is first class and your product appears to be the mutts (still to try your holecutters!) even on the weekend you still take time out to advise.
Many thanks for all this and a discount as well, well done.
