think id go with an angle grinder through the grout joints then chisel carefully under the tile to break adhesive bond, shouldnt pull screed with it then

I wouldn't put an angle grinder into the joints, that would damage the tiles. Use a fein/Bosch multitool, much better imo

Is this for a customer/builder? It might be that the tiles are not salvageable.

I would try every way possible, give the grinder a go to take the screed off the back, if thats no good have a go with the Fein but It might not have the guts to remove the sand and cement but is brilliant at removing the grout.

If its that old its sand and lime, set up a belt sander and clean it off that way, check the net for spare tiles or salvage yards

You may find the sand and cement bed is laid on black ash, which was quite common. If there is no dpm ( damp proof membrane) you will need to instal one. The methods used in those days varied from area to area. It was not unknown for these floors to be laid on the soil/clay base with some hardcore or black ash, the the tile bed, so you probably have a bit of prep work to do.

My tip for taking off the bed you could try bracing each piece edge on, on top of some protective padding then using a sharp wood chisel and pin hammer, give a sharp tap to the join between the tile and bed, ( watch your fingers) I have found this can work (not always) but maybe worth a go. Good luck.

Is the customer dead set on reusing these? Just thinking to make it a more efficient job,
Surely for the amount ud have to charge to lift and strip these and the risk involved in breaking them, it would be a similar price if not cheaper to go down the original style route? Just a though

As for stripping the backs, iv always soaked them overnight.

if the cement is that well stuck is there a casse for sticking them down with it still on. you can easily lower the floor under them. you could level them with a grinder
