Hi allWe've spent a fortune on our new patio and were distraught to find that once sealed; any water, rain or tap, leaves it with White spots. Our builders sealed it with a wickes sealant and it cost about £25.Help with removing it and if the white marks can be avoided would be very much appreciated!! One of two things has happened either the sealer was not applied correctly and moisture has got underneath it or the sealer is not breathable and it was applied whilst the stone was still damp. Either way it needs stripping, drying and resealing

    Hi,
Sandstone is a very porous material and would probably need at least three or four coats applied to it to prevent it from absorbing any further liquids. Although all sealers are meant to seal tiles against harmful liquids, some have a higher resistance. You will find generally that invisible or mattstone sealers have a lower resistance to that of a darker, such as LTP's Colour Intensifier. For something like sandstone/limestone/travertine, the colour intensifier will have very little effect on darkening the tiles, due to the light natured colour.
Wait until there's a sunny day and the tiles are dry before applying further coats to see if the original sealer increases the stones resistance.

    Hope this helps!

Sealer's are basicly a flash protection.. wipe up spills before they penetrate .. acidic spills etc will eat past sealer's...

A stone will only accept so much sealer to the point of saturation.. anymore and it is pointless.. Some sandstones are porous and some harder Indian ones are less.. So seal to the point of saturation for the particular stone in hand..

I have never managed to get more than three coats of impregnating sealer into any stone!!! Provided you leave the correct curing time for the transport agent to evaporate and then each coat to cure correctly.

It may be possible the excess sealer was not removed. Pictures would help.
