Default Locked in dust and dirt in slate kitchen tiles

    Hi There

Aboout 3 months ago our builder laid and sealed our slate floor. They used Fila Slate Protector. It seems however, that they dod not clean the floor properly and sealed in the general builders dust. The slate tiles now look continually dirty, we can't remove the ingrained dirt. What options do we have to get the tiles into a nice state? We are thinking we would now prefer to have the the tiles intesified (wet look) if that makes a difference.

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Thanks

    Grant

    Hello Grant and welcome..

You will need to strip the tiles back to original state and then you can use the sealer of your choice once they are clean, to get the wet look then a topical sealer would be needed.

Hi, the same thing has happened to me with a Caithness stone floor - Fila slate protector has been used on a dirty floor - can you advise the best way to strip it back? thanks

LTP Grimiex is the stripper i would use to get the floor clean and then depends on what finish you want for which sealer..

Lithofin is a good brand to use and they will offer advice on the various finishes available. The trick here is to remove the existing sealer with an acid based product then celan it to remove the muck and dust. The slate will need to be left to dry out (prob two to three days) so that you can see the final results of the cleaning. Protect it during this time and then once you are happy you can seal it with your chosen sealer.

It is good to know that something can be done.

Just so I am clear. We used this to seal Fila Slate Protector which is water based so LTP Grimiex will remove this, rather than something more powerful like LTP Solvex which seems more for heavy duty sealers.

This is a great forum by the way

    Thanks

    Grant
