    Default general tip for tiling

This might be helpful to some tilers, there are times when i might be putting thousands of pieces of tiles or mosaic down, if i wore gloves they would become useless because of the adhesive that inevitably gets stuck to them as you fiddle around fixing them.

So you fix without gloves and the end of your fingers nearly wear out ! others might have had this happen to them ?

I now use a spray of plastic skin it is sold in most chemists it wears off but it is quite cheap and saves your fingers plus your fingers are more adept without gloves.

Hope that is useful same applies if you don't like wearing gloves when grouting although could work out pricey doing that. Cheers Steve

Dead easy just scrubs off with soap etc. need to put couple of coats on but it lasts for long time i find it better for fiddly bits like triangles in my job but if you don't like gloves it is good.

Might i suggest that a good wet or dry barrier cream would be good as well and last but not least E45 for use after work = wife happy

I'm thinking it could also be used while sealing stone, save getting body oil from your hands onto the stone just before you seal it. Good post Steve

Nice tip,you could use barrier cream as well.
Another good tip is to use moisturiser regularly as well,no more " rough finger" complaints then lol

tougher than cream which if you are using the usual dry protection like rozalex comes off when the tile face is sponged off. barrier cream doesn't stop fingers getting worn out. this plastic skin gets used as a wear layer instead of your own.

Only just picked up this post by Tenchman- who like me does a lot of Victorain work. The unglazed vic tiles are terrible to work with as they suck out the oils from you hands and finger tips in particular and after a few days the ends of my fingers are cracking up and after another couple of days - they split and bleed. Takes ages to heal and unless you can replace the oil quickly enough the problem goes on for weeks

So I'm going to try the plastic coated finger trick - I'll let you know how I get on with it

    Thanks

PS - I do not and could not wear gloves when fixing / laying but have always worn latex gloves when grouting.

This product has been recommended a few times.. so probs worth thinking about as well..

Gloves In A Bottle is a shielding lotion that rapidly absorbs into, and bonds with, the outer layer of skin creating a protective layer while retaining the natural moisture from within. This makes it the perfect dry skin care product.

It does not wash off, but comes off naturally with exfoliated skin cells. Just reapply every four hours for continued protection.

    It's greaseless, non-sticky, fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, completely safe and non-toxic.

Thanks Tommy - I have asked for a free sample on the web site and I was suprised to find they sent an email back stating ' Please send an SAE to them and they will send a free sample back ' - Thats an odd way of carrying on I thought, now with your comments about getting your hands wet, which is hard to avoid in our business, I'm loosing interest. I will try the plastic skin stuff though that Tenchman recommends.

As a side issue / related subject : I do find my major probs with my hands - skin on finger tips splitting and bleeding, especially in the winter can be helped by removing the old dead / dry skin on my fingers with a pumbice stone / dry skin remover tool when in the shower after work. This works on two ways, its the old skin at the surface which cracks up because its lost all its flexiblity and the new skin growing beneath it is soft and pliable and hence it does not crack up so easily.
[The other advantage is - if the Garda nick u for something and finger print you - you have no prints left - Dab off Tommy] Only joking of course !! Honest guv

Hi Tommy - I spent a lot of time in Ireland, worked for Bell Lines [Bell Ferry] in Waterford / Dublin / Cork in a past life and some of your lovelly Irish charm must have rubbed off. At one stage, my wife said, - since you spend more time in Ireland than you do at home, why don't we move to Ireland, and we nearly did. - Still can't spell Garda - Gardai !!

    Best Wishes
