Unhappy Heeelp!

I've recently bought an original Victorian cast iron fireplace, complete with original deep blue tiles. It had been covered (including tiles) in white gloss, most of which had been removed before I bought it. Some of the tiles have large dull patches on them. It looks as though the glaze has either come off, or they have a coating of something on them. I've tried soapy water, white spirit, paint stripper and a lot of elbow grease but nothing has worked. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Caroline,

A bit too far for me to look. However, if the glaze is off the tiles I think you have very little hope of restoring it because it has probably damaged the pattern underneath as well. Without pictures it is hard to tell. When you say you tried stripper did you allow it time to dwell and then use an emulsifying pad to scrub? Or did you just put stripper on and try to rub the area?
