600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
Hi guys,
1st post so please go easy!
Question if I may!
Can I fit 600x600 porcelain floor tiles to my en-suite bathroom walls?
Walls have been recently been replastered and was only going to partially tile shower and sink area. Was going o PVA walls before tiling too.
If possible whats the best stuff for this?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Cheers

Re: 600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
600x600 porcs are too heavy for plaster skim I'm afraid.
PVA has no place in tiling - Acrylic primer to compliment your chosen adhesive manufacturer should be used.

Re: 600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
on plastered skim walls i wouldnt advise it saddleworth far too heavy
dont use pva either if you get a primer such as primer g that will be better

Re: 600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
As above, you would need to change the substrate to take the weight of those tiles and never prime with PVA, get yourself a decent primer.

Re: 600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
Ok so I guess it's the single weight of the larger tiles that is the problem, so would 600x300 be better??
If so what adhesive do you recommend guys?
Really appreciate the advice

It's not the size of the tile, it's the weight per square metre you need to be wary of. Someone will post what it is on plastered walls, I can't remember off the top of my head, 30kg per metre I think.

Re: 600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
20kg m2 on plastered walls...Hi and welcome.

Re: 600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
You need to check how much your tiles weigh per m2 on the box, then add the weight of the adhesive and grout. Plaster skim has a limit of 20kg per m2 and bare plaster board has a weight limit of 32kg per m2.

Re: 600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
May sound like a daft question, but if I got a similar tile but 600x300 what's the difference? I'm still having to put the same(ish) mass on the wall?..
Thanks

It doesn't matter if the tile is 10x10cm or 100x100cm, it's the weight per square metre not the size of the tile. Most tiles come in boxes of 1 m2 and will have a weight on the box, this will help you choose a suitable tile.

Re: 600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
You could get ceramic tiles which don't weigh as much. Porcelain floor tiles are quite heavy, as they're designed to be robust and hard wearing. If you get ceramic wall tiles, they don't need to be as dense or tough so are generally constructed with lighter materials.

Re: 600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
It is the weight per meter thats important, not the weight per tile. Tiles that are that kind of size tend to be porcelain and very dense, therefore weigh a lot. If you are unsure, give the manufacturer/supplier a ring and ask how much the weigh per meter (or look on the box if there is a meter per box), then add around 4kg per meter for adhesive and grout. If it exceeds the max holding weight for that wall then you will have to think about either changing the tile or changing the wall.

Welcome, as above 20kg per m2 on plaster board skim, also Allow for adhesive and grout. Are you Saddleworth near Oldham? If so we are neighbours.

Re: 600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
Thanks for the replies guys...
Yes, I'm up here in Saddleworth for my sins ;-)
I weighed the tiles (pack of 3 from b&q = 1.08m2) and it came in at 25kg, so way over the recommended 20kg.
Back to b&q it is for either ceramics or something smaller and lighter!!!
Once again many thanks ;-)

a smaller tile could still be over the weight limit per m2

Re: 600 x 600 Porcelain tiles on wall?
Thanks Mike, yes I'm going to make sure I don't exceed the 20kg including adhesive and grout just to make sure!!!
I'm sure people do exceed the design limit and get away with it, but after advice here I'm going to play it safe!!
Thanks again
