I have noticed that alot of people on the forum ask questions on tile backer boards and also tanking boards, so I thought I would add this post as a Marmox ready reckoner to assist......

Marmox board is available in sheets of varying lengths and thicknesses, wetroom formers, curved board, pipe boxing and pre-made bath panels



MARMOX BOARDS (also known as construction board, tile backer board, insulation board)

Intermediate substrate for internal and external walls and internal floors.
Marmox board is a rigid extruded polystyrene foam with a closed cellular structure and a flame retardant additive.

Key features-

• Waterproof and never breaks down even when submersed
• Excellent thermal insulation that satisfies the U-value requirements of part L of the UK building regulations (0.22 for floors, 0.28 for walls).
• The nonconductive surface reduces condensation by masking any cold bridging from the substrate beneath.
• The cementatious surface is resistant to heat and the chemicals within the sheathing around electric underfloor heating elements making it safe to use with these types of systems.
• 36kg/m3 density extruded polystyrene covered on both sides with fibreglass mesh encased in a 0.75mm (approx) layer of polymer modified concrete which permanently bonds the mesh surface to the polystyrene.
• Suitable to hold a hanging weight of 60kg per square metre. This weight includes both the tiles and the adhesive.
• Easy to cut using just a knife or saw
• Tiles are fixed directly to the boards without the need for priming. Boards can be plaster coated but would need priming with an epoxy or SBR primer beforehand.
• Lightweight. A 10mm board weighs just over 2kg and a 20mm board just 2.5kg so they can be transported and fitted by just one person.
• Suitable for -50oC to +80oC

Specifications-
Width: All boards are 600mm wide and either 1.25m or 2.5m long.
Thickness: 4mm, 6mm, 10mm, 12.5mm, 20mm, 30mm, 40mm, 50mm, 60mm


Fixing-

FLOORS:
Wood (must be free from deflection)

• Tile adhesive (C2 grade) with screws and Marmox washers placed every 300mm (Use 12 stainless steel screws / Marmox washers per 1.25m board….3 rows of 4). Secure the Marmox boards tightly to the floor, in a brick like staggered fashion.
  CAUTION…..ensure screws used are only long enough to fix into existing floor, and no further as this could hit a pipe or cable.

Concrete

• As above, but no need for screws

STUD WALLS (TIMBER / METAL):

• Screws and Marmox washers every 300mm
• Application: use with screws, 20mm longer than board thickness

SOLID WALLS:
Dot & Dab (with mechanical fixings)
Recommended if a wall is already covered in plaster, slightly uneven, has a slightly crumbly surface or is of a material that is not suitable for to bond with tile adhesive
Marmox Boards are fixed using Marmox dowel fixings, or plug & screw, supported with dabs of tile adhesive. Board thickness should be at least 12.5mm if using this method.
It is recommended that for dotting and dabbing, at least 15 fixing points per long board and 9 fixing points per short board should be used. All the edges must be secure and exhibit no movement.

1. Using a 10mm drill, make the appropriate number of holes in the board.
2. Apply dabs of (cement based) flexible tile adhesive to the back of the board over the holes sufficient to provide as much contact with the wall.
3. Press the board firmly against the wall and ensure there is no movement whatsoever.
4. Fix other boards with no gaps between and them and using a long flat edge, (such as a piece of timber) press all the boards flat and flush with each other.
5. When the adhesive has cured and hardened, drill through the board using a 10mm drill through into the wall behind. Insert and fix the Marmox dowel fixings (or plug & screw)
6. Marmox self adhesive reinforcing tape should then be applied over the joints.


Continuous bed of tile adhesive
If fitting to a flat and exposed brick, block or concrete wall, any size board can be fixed using this method. Mechanical fixings as per dot & dab method are recommended for heavy tiles



BOARD TO BOARD
Use a non solvent based adhesive such as acrylic, polyurethane or MS Adhesive


IN WET AREAS:

• Seal all joints with Acrylic sealant, a Self Adhesive waterproof tape or a tanking gum and tape system

IN DRY / DAMP AREAS:

• Seal all joints with Self Adhesive reinforcing tape

MARMOX CURVED BOARD

Marmox Curved Boards can be used to clad, waterproof and insulate archways and curved walls and also to create curved partition walls, curved bathroom panels, moulded tiled seats, round or curled cubicles etc.

Boards are curved “inwards” (closing the serrations) or outwards (opening the gaps between the cuts) depending on the situation.
Marmox Curved Boards are made from 20mm Marmox Board, 600mm x 1250mm.



MARMOX PIPE BOXING

Specially designed to enable easy, fast and clean boxing-in of exposed pipe work. The Marmox pipe Boxings are completely waterproof so they are suitable for shower and wet rooms.
Marmox Pipe Boxing is 20mm thick and is supplied in 2.5m and 1.25m lengths. The arms of the Boxing is available in the following widths:

• 150mm x 150mm
• 200mm x 200mm
• 300mm x 300mm
• 400mm x 200mm

MARMOX BATH PANELS

Marmox Bath Panels are easy to fit surround panels for baths. Easily cut the panels to the correct length and adjust the height using the feet supplied. The Panels are completely waterproof and ready to be tiled once fitted.

Included in a Marmox Bath Panel kit is the following...
1 x 600mm x 1800mm x 30mm Marmox Board
1 x 600mm x 800mm x 30mm Marmox Board

MARMOX WET ROOM FORMERS

The Showerlay is a low-cost, easy-to-install waterproof base, used in the design of a wet room.
Made to fit with the Marmox Dallmer drain system which easily screws through the top and bottom to create a watertight seal.
The Showerlay can be easily cut into any size or shape and forms a floor level, barrier-free panel ready to receive tiles. Use waterproof tanking tape around the edges of the tray and up the corner of the wall.

MARMOX SHOWERSTONE WET ROOM FORMER

The Showerstone is a solid shower base that can be laid directly onto floor joists without any further support needed. Made from a polymer (acrylic) modified concrete, The Showerstone can be increased in size by adding a separate extension piece.
Made to fit with the Marmox McAlpine drain in either vinyl or tile, as unlike many other shower tray brands, a Marmox showerstone is robust enough to allow vinyl or mosaic tiles to be laid on it without the risk of compression through point loading.

The Perimeter height is 22mm
The Extension piece slopes from 22mm - 33mm

This new design is ideal for all size tiles whether large or mosaic and will also feature a new surface which offers a smoother surface to tile onto. They have a four way fall so all sides slope towards the drain.

Usally use Wedi but orderd two of the showerstone formers to tile shortly and the walls in Marmox boards all from PHG.

Curious to see how they compare to Wedi.

hi guys good post i have never used this product before. i am currently doing my new conservatory 11.5m2. i have a concrete floor. not too sure how level it is and i was wondering before i glue the marmox boards down (50mm) do i need to self level the floor? or will the tile glue be ok to take out any bits which is lower or higher? oh and also i will be using electric under floor heating (matting) thanks guys

Glad it has been of some help.

I would get it as level as possible to start with, fix Marmox, lay UFH, then SLC over the top

ok so self level it once the ufh in down? do i need to prime the concrete 1st aswell?

prime, slc, lay boards, lay ufh, slc then tile.

Was just wondering, i need to replace my current bath panel (just the front as it has walls on the sides and back) It is 174cm in length (made up of a slight curved 137cm plus a straight 37cm) and 52cm in height. The bath panel package sold by Marmox has more material than needed, your information (which by the way is brilliant!) states i could use standard marmox boards, which sounds like a great idea.
So finally to my questions:
how thick does it need to be? so i can follow the curve of the bath
does it have to be tiled or can it be painted?
and which one is it on the PHG website?

Welcome to the site Kavita.

I would call PHG direct to ask them. I am slightly confused by the shape (design) of your bath panel from your description. Any photos you can post on here please? You would have to plaster the marmox boards if you wanted to paint them. I know you can do this, but never seen it done myself
