    They're quite local to me.

While I'm at it do you know a B'ham retailer for No More Ply?

Just been to CTD. Prices looked very good but then it turns out they won't sell retail - at least not at a price that's reasonable. They wanted £44 for a bag of Weber.set rapid SPF retail but have it on offer to account holders at £12 +vat.

I'm not up to paying £44 a bag. Is there anywhere else in B'ham area that will sell it to a DIY'r without trying to bend them over at the same time?

Tile Giant stock Mapei gear at a lot more realistic prices than CTD stocking Weber. i don't know the retail prices of the Mapei gear myself, but they are definitely cheaper than Weber and BAL.

Alternatively, you could try looking for Buildfix products in B&Q - Buildfix are manufactured by Mapei. I seem to recall a bag of Buildfix grey non-flexi powdered adhesive was around the £20 mark.

I can get the weber rapid spf for £14 but it means a trip in the car. I was looking for something a bit closer to home.

Tile Giant ( Erdington) will sort you out with Mapei Adhesives and grouts and also stock No More Ply.

if your not trade your not going to get it for trade prices,14 pounds a bag sounds good but i suppose it depends how far you have to travel to get it to make it worthwhile as you say, mapei do a buildfix flexi addy that sells in b and q for around 20 pounds a bag, good deal as far as im concerned

I think there are trade prices and there are trade prices. Whilst I'm not going to get the same price that someone buying thousands of bags per year is going to get I'd imagine that most tile fitters aren't either.

Over the years I've seen most "trade" places open up to the retail customer. They'll offer additional discounts based on account volume but they'll also sell retail and at a decent price and I think the internet has helped this through promoting competition.

Anyway, got the stuff now at £14.50 a bag inc VAT.

Same story with the tiles - one retailer wanted £40 per sq m, local retailer wanted £50, in the end found one via the web for £30 - same tiles and some time you just end up cutting out he middle man oryou find someone with a busines model based on volume. Shop around these days.

your not being bent over, you are paying full retail price and quite right too , if your not trade why do you expect to get trade discount, your right when you say that not all trade buy by the pallet but what they do do is patronise the outlet regularily and bring sales to the suppliers, its two way traffic that makes for good business deals on both sides, as a one off buyer your not part of that process and shouldnt expect to be

    Wasn't looking for an argument.

What you are describing is one business model that's the norm in this business. But businesses need to be careful just continuing with a traditional business model - they can leave the space for someone else to move in and put them out of business by offering a more attractive proposition.

How many would stick with their local shop if someone started offering better prices? Not enough, which is why many of the small trades places have closed.

A retailer can offer discounts to anyone it wishes - trade account volume discounts are a bit like collecting Tesco club points in that they encourage you to but from the same outlet, or you might offer web based discounts to reflect the ease with which people can cast around for the best deal on the web - if you aren't offering a good price you aren't gonna get the business.

Trade discounts or any other type of discount are just a retailers business decision.

if your not looking an argument dont complain that your being had over when your not

ive explained how it works and theres nothing outdated about it, discount warehouses come and go along with the retail only oulets. those that have a good relationship with trade survive

its not about price only, its about service, availability and aftercare. you dont get that from the web or we would have done it long ago and the trade outlets would be out of business

another thing the outlets have is a showroom to send clients to look at the tiles, I would be amazed if you hadnt chose a tile in a showromm and then searched online for it

the problem is what you see isnt always what you get and returning it and proving its inferior to the pics they showed you is near impossible

so long live the trade outlet that is trusted by trade, sells as described as is there when things go wrong

and long may they look after trade by offering discount to their regulars as a reward for patronage and leave the throat cutting to the discount boys who will be selling something else in a few years time
