depends how much cutting is involved,
i.e if it's a small akward floor that the toilet can't be removed then i will dry cut and then knock up enough addy to do the whole floor
    or
a massive area then it's a gorrilla tub full of the stuff
    or
an area taht i intend to do the cuts as i go then i mix up my first batch then work it from there depending on how long it is taking to go off and how fast i'm going
alcohol-the cause and solution to all of lifes problems

You spread as much as you can cover before it skins over..open time of the adhesive

If you have vertical markings then using your trowel horizontally will reveal them enough to see, vise versa for for horizontal lines. Also, as has been mentioned, depends on area, cuts and adhesive type, rapid setting on other.

as Dave says don't let it skin over, just spread accordingly depending on your speed and pot life of addy.
