ply or plasterboard ?
Hi all first time posting here.
I am sure that it has been covered before,
Have been asked to install a bathroom over easter.
Existing walls around bath are lathe an plaster one one side and brick plastered wall on the other.
Plaster is blown on both walls, so i am going to remove all old tiles and plaster. On the brick side I am planning to use tanalised battens to level out the wall, then use either green plaster board or 12mm exterior ply.
I know that the ply will be more expensive, but feel that it will be stronger (plus its for a friend, dont want it to fail!)
Asking you proffesionals, what would you prefer to tile onto, green board or ply?
Or could I splash out on aquaboard for the area around the taps and shower head, then use green plasterboard for the other areas.
I am a chippy. but needs must at the moment,
And if ply, any thing to do before I Tile. ie pva the board, leave a gap between boards, silicone gaps.
Any help gratefully received.

Re: ply or plasterboard ?
As Ed says above, avoid Ply
Also please don't use PVA when tiling

Re: ply or plasterboard ?
I would just use plasterboard and tank any area's subject to constant wetting or risk of water ingression.

Re: ply or plasterboard ?
Thanks for all the advice guys,
So thats final, no ply then!
I have just been down to Wickes (UK diy chain), and priced up aquaboard and mr plasterboard, Price is fine.
Or are you going to tell me to steer well clear of them ?
I wasnt going to buy adhesive or grout etc from them, but buy good quality stuff (bal?)
but without having a trade account for anywhere else the prices seem ok for board?
Once again thanks, and if this bathroom goes ok I will get the kitchen and fiited wardobes job as well ! will keep you posted.

Re: ply or plasterboard ?
Choice is fine.
You will get just as good adhesives etc cheaper than BAL..
Mapei/Ultra/PCI..etc also very good brands.

Re: ply or plasterboard ?
Why not dot and dab the plasterboard to the wall instead of batten? Its much faster than levellling in a batten then screwing the boards up. It also very wasy to do it you havent done it before.

Battens can be a pain, dry wall for me

Re: ply or plasterboard ?
Good idea,
I have dobbed and dabbed before!
Would aquapanel and plaster board stick to shiny tiles no problem?
While im here, is there a standard height for a bath to be off the floor ?
thanks again

Personally I would'nt, there will be alot of weight on the existing tiles and plasterboard adhesive would'nt be the best to use on smooth surfaces.

Re: ply or plasterboard ?
You also cant dot and dab aquapanel.
Bath height is dependant on your panel? Ideal standard are 515mm to underside of bath edge. Normal around 550 to top side of bath.

Re: ply or plasterboard ?
is it advisable to d & d on a lathe and plaster wall. if your stripping back to the studs would it not be easier to board out
I know nothing I havent learnt
