Default Which tile adhesive/grout to use?

    Hello,

I am new to tilling and looking at doing my bathroom, I am unclear which is the best product for this. Is it better to get a seperate grout and adhessive product or a product that can do both in the same tub.

On screwfix I am looking at buying the BAL Blue Star Non-Slip Tile Adhesive 5L and Dunlop Mixed Anti-Bacterial Grout White 1.5kg are these any good?

    Thank You in advance,

    Neil

Avoid adhesive and grout combination tubs, they're not particularly fantastic quality.

Do you have a Tile Giant store near you? Tile Giant

I'd recommend going in there and speaking to one of the assistants in the shop and asking for their advice. Tell them what you are planning to do - bathroom, what tiles, size of room etc and they'll be able to help you.

Plus you'll probably find they're more competitive than screwfix.

you're better off with a powdered adhesive rather than a dispersion (tubbed) adhesive. What tiles are you using, ceramic, porcelain, natural stone? What is the substrate you are tiling onto? stud walls, masonry walls,? if you give us some more info, we'll be only too happy to steer you in the right direction

I am tilling with cermaic floor/wall tiles onto a freshley skimmed plaster wall.

Is the powder easy to mix for a newbie?

Powder adhesive is easy to use, just mix what you are comfortable with, maybe enough for a metre at a time and mix more as you get quicker. You would have been better if the walls were not skimmed as bare plaster board takes more weight. Check the weight of the tiles before you start to make sure they are not too heavy.

Great thanks I am looking at using the MAPEI Keraquick White 5kg, Ultracolor Plus Grout Jasmine 5kg and Mapei Tile Adhesive Primer 1kg . Hopefully this will be the winning combo? With the primer is it just pasted on and allowed to dry?

    No!! but you sell it...

I have used alsorts over the years Leo.. and mapei knocks spots off weber from the CTD/Saint gobain group IMHO..

I have tried the weber gear and can't get away with it..

So this weber advice Leo...?,, is this as a pro fixers advice or just a pure sales advice based on price..?

I take it you also fix tiles as well as sell them..? and have full experaince of how different products cope with different materials and how the tensile strength compares..

The all give a guarantee.I used Weber for the first 3 or 4 years before I changed to Mapei and Iv never looked back. Weber is not bad, there is a hell of a lot worse addys to use but a million miles from Mapei... And no I dont work for/ sell Mapei.

if a customer has gone into ctd in warrington and bought tiles and adhesive, then 9 times out of ten they will have bought weber and i'll use it BUT pound for pound mapei has the best all round range of adhesives, grouts and sillicones imho and they are always my 1st and preferred choice..

I agree Leo.. too many fixers are orientated by price.. a shame but they are.. This is where I and quite a few on here differ.

We prefer to use a product that we know we can be rest assured will back what guarantees we give.

I personally am not driven by a low price for an adhesive.. but saying that i will not pay high prices like Bal either..

    So for me it's mapei....

But i am pleased you do sell others as well as this keeps fixers who do prefer to use another brand coming to you.

it might be due to availability? i am in liverpool and the majority of the independent tile shops stock granfix. we also have palace chemicals in speke so they have a big impact but their popularity are based on low price and availabilty imo not because they would be the prefered choice.

ps just to add if it works for you fine, iam not knocking anyone or any particular brand its just mapei has really impressed me over the past 3 yrs of using it:0)

freshly?? Never do tiling on fresh surface! You must wait till surface completly dry. (i dont know exacly how it is with plaster, but for example cement screed 75 mm coat need 28 days then you can do tiling)
