tiling around reveals
hello everyone. i have a problem . i am not a pro but i can tile to a certain extent . i seem to be having problems with corner beeds for reveals etc..
i need to know the best way of putting up mitred edges. do you set them in before you tile ie a couple of hours or as you proceed to tile the window . i have tried this and they move all over the place plus i cannot get mitres correct. please help because it looks a pigs ear especially when i have worked so hard on the walls

Re: tiling around reveals
Hi Daz and welcome to the forum.
When you come to do a window tile around it first, get all the tiles level and even. You can then start to fit your reveal tiles, measure the length for your trims, if your trim is say 12mm deep then measure in from each end 12mm and draw a line, you then have a square on each end, cut the mitre corner to corner, this will give you the mitre you require. Apply some adhesive to the sill or to wherever you want to start, fit the trim and bed down into the adhesive. Cut the tiles to fit but allow for a small 1/2 mm gap between the trim and the tile, use spacers to hold the trim off the already fixed tiles. this will allow you to grout between the tiles and trim, carry on until your window is finished. If when you have finished you have a gap between your trims, ie they dont quite fit, then when everything is dry apply your silicone in the normal way, this will cover the small gap and give you a flawless finish.
Take your time mate, windows are easy but only after you have the experience will they become easy, practice cutting mitres until you get them right.
You can use a full length trim, just cut it into small pieces.
As you gain more confidence you will be able to cut the trims by eye.
Use bagged adhesive not tubbed, your tiles will hold much better. On the sides of the window, fit the largest lowest tile first, the one thats only being cut to the window, then fit the one that goes to the ledge and the window below, this will allow you to support the tiles with spacers as you go up the reveal.
Let the cill tiles dry before fitting the top reveal, you can support them if need be with a piece of plasterboard cut to length and some battens.

Re: tiling around reveals
The way I'd do it:
- Tile your window wall (sometimes leave the top cut off above the window to reduce the chance of the top window cheques slipping)
- Work out your lengths, cut them, giving each about 50mm extra (usually cut it as an appropriate mitre to speed things up, mitre box helps)
- Set your first length with the one mitred side into place on the windowsil, and mark by eye with a pencil the other side of the window.
- Using that mark, this will be the outside section of your mitre, mitre using this mark as your "outside point"
- Trial fit trim - should now be a nice tight fit to either side, spread adhesive the whole reveal and then push the trim down firmly.
I personally find it easier to cut all my trim first before I start tiling the inside of the window.
