Adhesive help Please
Hi all,
Planning on fitting 360x275 ceramic tiles in a bathroom onto 2 walls plasterboard and 2 walls brick/cement and also on to ply floor
Any reccomendations on whats best to use
Tub / Cement based (prefer tub save time on mixing)
Also is a primer required and if so type
Many Thanks

Re: Adhesive help Please
Use an acrylic bond and avoid tubbed, bagged is best and mixing only takes a few minutes anyway, use a slower setting adhesive if you don't feel the fast set is for you.

Re: Adhesive help Please
As Above, I would prime the walls with an acrylic primer and use a single part flexible standard set adhesive white for the walls(I say white because i presume you are using white or a light coloured grout and this will prevent the grey adhesive bleeding threw the grout if you dont keep the tile joints very clean although it is a bit more expensive then grey to buy)
When you say a ply floor i presume this ply is placed over the top of the existing floor and screwed down at 300mm min centres and there is no deflection in the floor? and it is a minimum of 15mm thick? if so then a single part flexible bagged adhesive will be fine for this! all though i would prefer to use either hardi backer board or no more ply.
As to sealing the ply follow the adhesive manufacturers advice on the bag for this as some companies say to seal the face to be tiled and some dont! However the back and sides of the ply should be sealed before it is fixed and again i would use an acrylic primer.
If you decide to go with tubbed adhesive for the walls then I would make sure it is the flexible type say maybe "bal white star" depends whats available in your area!
any other questions then come back to us

Yes it will be grouted with white

yes i will be putting ply over floor boards

I would prefer to use a tubbed adhesive far easier and less messier although i beleive it is more pricier doing it this way
Are the tiles not to large for tubbed adhesive
Thanks for all the replys

Re: Adhesive help Please
I'd personally use tubbed for the walls with those tiles. Preferably Granfix Supergrip, or Palace Supergrip if i can't get the Granfix. If i could get spf cheaper here, i might be tempted to use it more often, but as it stands for me, tubbed is so much cheaper...
Rapid spf for the floor, preferably grey, but that'd depend on the grout you were using and the tile colour.

Re: Adhesive help Please
Tiles are too big for tubbed in my opinion.

Re: Adhesive help Please
Depends how you look at it Fekin. They say up to 300x300 with tubbed, because it needs contact with air to dry. The furthest point from the grout lines on a 300x300 is 150mm, furthest point from the grout lines on these tiles is 137.5mm, so imho it'll dry. Of course, it's horses for courses.
