Primer for over vinyl tiles
First time working with porc over a large area and going to be laying over vinyl tiles, they're firmly stuck down so no need to remove them.
The tiles are 400m x 400mm so I'll be using Keraflex maxi and easypoxy grout; the reason for the poxy is because it's going to get wet in areas every now and will need to be kept hygienic, so I don't want to risk any staining in the process of cleaning.
I did see a similar job a friend did using the same tiles, he used a different brand of flexi addy and although the result has lasted there's one or two tiles that have popped...more than likely because the wrong primer type of primer was used!
He can't remember what he actually used as it's a few years ago.
So what would you all recommend as the best primer for the job, and best brand...synth?
Thanks for any advice

Re: Primer for over vinyl tiles
It's a concrete floor, and the vinyl addy is black bitumen at a guess....house is 70's build

Re: Primer for over vinyl tiles
You can tile over them but it is best to remove if you can....if the bitumen adhesive is loose then remove mechanically and if it's stuck well then personally i would slurry coat prime and then tile it..
Then you have no issues of the water breaking the bond of the vinyls.....

Re: Primer for over vinyl tiles
The water issues will only be due to cleaning with a mop etc etc, it's not a bathroom/shower area.
The vinyl tiles are very secure, maybe a few around the edges have chipped away but 99.9% of them aren't ready for budging in the slightest; I've thought about ripping them all up but I'd rather not if possible, I know it's the best way to ensure a good finish and I'm not shying away from the extra work involved, I'm more concerned about the bitumen based addy underneath causing me more problems.
I really don't want to end up screeding the whole floor because of the old addy when I could get away with laying on top of the vinyl tiles.
I've been told to just use primer, but you mention a slurry prime coat Dave...whats the benefits over just a straight primer?

Re: Primer for over vinyl tiles
The benefit is a stronger bond...You mix a 50/50 SBR and adhesive then brush onto the floor....
If you are adamant about the viynls then yopu will have to clean them first..sugar soap and scrub...then leave to dry then prime with neat SBR...and tile within 24hrs of priming.
BUT if you use a heat gun the viynls will lift up veru easily...

Re: Primer for over vinyl tiles
Thanks Dave, never though of using a heatgun!
If I did decide to get them up then what about the bitumen based addy beneath...is there something specific to seal this before tiling or would the primer then slurry coat still be the best course of action?

Re: Primer for over vinyl tiles
The slurry coat is the primer as well........
