    Default Tiling on Timber Floor

    Hi Tiling Guru's

Some advice if anyone has a few moments...

My house is 10 years old and I have an Entrance Hall measuring 3.9 x 3 and a WC off of this measuring 2.1 x 1.1 have purchased 15m2 of 330mm square ceramic Tiles.

The floor in this area is 20mm ply on Timber joists (i believe) and feels relatively solid under foot.

My scenario is.... I was quoted £75 per bucket of Flexible 2 part Adhesive and was advised that I would need 5 buckets.... at this point I picked myself up of the floor and said to the sales man, he his having a GIRAFFE!

Can anyone suggest/advise/direct me to the Best solution to my needs and if i was nearly robbed or not...?

    Thanks in Advance.

Hello and welcome.....£75... nice price eh...

Personally i would use 6mm hardi and then mapei keraquick....but you can use a 2 part adhesive as well like keraquick and latex plus...

If the floor is solid then another option to cmbat lateral stress with ply is an isolation membrane...like ditra or durabase ci...

Some fixers will also just tile straight over as it is with an S1 adhesive but like i said i would use a 6mm cement board like hardi 250, this gives a more stable substrate IMO.

    Thanks Dave....

Yeah - Price gave me a minor Heart Attack....

So i would not really get away with out having to lay additional boarding down... I'm restricted on Height due to fire doors etc and was hoping to tackle it with limited additional height....

At present its Carpet & Underlay thats being removed.

It depends on the deflection and fixing of the ply....it should be fixed and braced at 300mm centres and this might involve adding noggings.

Your cheapest option is a 2 part adhesive ( S2) as this will cope with the lateral expansion better. Ply can be prone to expanding and contracting to changes in room temp ...

What tiles shops are near to you..?

Yeah - the £75 per Bucket shock me somewhat....

Would be keen to know if I were not going to add additional Ply... what mix/adhesive should/could I use...(mind you you could tell me i'm a prat and this is not advisable)

Also how many bags/buckets... and where best to get it from (I'm in Dartmouth, South Devon)

    Suggestions welcome...

If you really don't have the room for 6mm hardie, you have a few choices for tiling onto ply. 1. Mapei keraquick and latex plus, 2. Ardex 7001, 3. BAL Fastflex (not nice to use, I hate the stuff personally but a great adhesive). For my presonal pref I would use the ardex but as I can't get it, I use the Mapei and latexplus admix...also a great adhesive.

I like the new single part fastflex.

If you have a topps tiles in your area, you could ask them about "Palace 2 part adhesive" a lot cheaper than Bal stuff.........and its ok to use

I had a feeling it would be topps who quoted that price to you.

By the way are you sure it's ply you already have down and not contract flooring? (chipboard) it's not standard practice to lay ply in newbuilds unless they had a reason

Do your boards look like this?

they might even have a slight green shade to them
