Default Prep of existing concrete floor of walk in shower?

    Hi all,

I am tiling the concrete floor of my sisters walk in shower. It has been levelled with a new screed that was done over 2 months ago.

Do I just using a tanking product on the floor along with the plastered walls or does it need any special attention or product?

    Mant thanks for any advice.

    Cheers Si

Is it a standard shower tray or a wet room shower

    Thanks for replying whitebeam.

Its a downstairs shower room with toilet and basin. Its in a extension with concrete floors. It has separate shower area that you step down into. So not really a wet room!
The shower area had tiling on floor and walls that failed and I have removed. It has three walls that are plastered and will have a glass screen to protect the rest of the room. The floor has been fitted with a new drain and new level concrete screed. So does not have a shower tray either ! The shower floor area is 2.5mx 1.5m ish!!!

    Sorry for the vague description!

    Any help!

    Cheers Si

It must be tanked by sound of how the shower is decribed, how much lower is the shower area to the rest of the floor

Just measured and was way out! Typical bloke over exaggerating size!!!

Area of shower floor is 1.6m x 0.9m. The step down into the shower is 2 inches. The size of tiles is 30x30cm. Not sure there is the room to get a fall to the drain, is it ok to have a flat area?

    Cheers for your input whitebeam.

If you have a flat area water may get trapped on the surface, you don't need a massive fall just enough for the water to move off the tiles into the drain. You don't mention if your drain is in the centre or at one end, check wetdecs site for some very good information on pre-formed trays

Wetdecs wet room supplier, wet room shower tray, tanking. waterproofing from leading wetroom company.

Cheers whitebeam for your help on this.

My sis can't really afford any more lay out for this and those pre-formed are not cheap. Is it possible to build up the adhesive on the tiles to get a slight fall? Or is it just a case of angling the outer edge tiles so that water at least does not collect where the floor meets the walls. Sorry for the unprofessional approach but she really is at a limit budget wise. Any suggestions?!?

As shower is rectangular, the drain is situated where the pink spot is on a snooker table, if that helps!!!!

If you build up on the adhesive use one that can have a thickness, mapei keraflex maxi can do upto a 15mm bed, some even 20mm thick but just give it a slight fall for the water to head for the drain. I would waterproof the plastered walls and also the floor, wetdecs does a good product called durabase wp for linning the walls and floor or you could go for bal wp1 with a jointing tape, it's whats avalaible in your area.

Just check the screed floor in the shower, the screeder may have given it some kind of falls to wards the drain

definatley waterproof and check screed for falls. and remember to take your time to do it right.

Thanks very much for your help and advice.

Think I will go with the paint on tanking stuff as seems a little more 'beginner friendly' to me. Is it best to tank from floor to ceiling, or is that a little overkill?

Once again thanks for taking the time to reply.

    Cheers

If your've got the water proofing go the whole hog, don't forget to tape all the wall/wall floor/wall angles with tape supplied/matting for the floor of the shower and read the instructions mate

    Good luck

    Thanks whitebeam.

    One last question,you hope!

I have been reading alot on here and web about tanking the concrete floor and I think I am confusing myself to be honest! Info overload!
I favour the paint on stuff as it just seems easier to me. Especially for a novice, at least I can paint!
Can I just use the same paint on product on both the floor and walls and do the joints with tape ie no matting needed. It is the matting that confuses me, is it needed along with the paint on stuff or is it a separate way of tanking completely?
Once the walls and floor are 'painted' and dry is it ok to walk on the floor, as I was planning to tile the walls first and then the floor.

    Thanks for your patience! Si

The matting is 1m2 to cover the whole floor, , I would do the walls first down to the floor, apply tape, tile walls but leave the last tile at the bottom of the wall until your've tiled the floor. Apply wp1 to the floor and cover totaly with the 1m2 mesh, you may need 2 to cover the size of the shower floor, tile the floor when set fix the last row of wall tiles.

This may save you some money, go to a car spares shop/halfords and you should find some fibre glass (the fine version) for body repairs, I've used with the wp1 and there's not a lot of difference between the two. I paid £3.50 a 1m2, get a couple and cut one into strips for the angles wall/wall floor/wall about 4-5 inch wide.
