Tiling over tiles
Hi to all
I'm a new boy just making his way in the tiling world loving it at the moment. Quick question for you experienced types.
I'm tiling around a bath that has a small splashback a couple of tiles high around it. The customer wants new tiles from b ath height to the ceiling. The walls are all plasterboard. The existing tiles are about 12mm thick. I don't want to knock of the old tiles as they seem pretty well stuck and I know they'll rip holes in the existing plasterboard turning a relatively straight forward job into a messy one.
My question is what is best to use to bring the existing plasterboard walls upto the level of the existing tiles. I was thinking of screwing waterproof plasterboard to the existing plasterboard with cavity wall plugs.
I'm just concerned about the weight issue i.e plasterboard onto top of plaster board then tiles on top again. Anyone got any thoughts or suggestions.
Cheers

Re: Tiling over tiles
Take them off and if required cut back plaster board to studwork and replace.

Re: Tiling over tiles
Thanks guys. I've done that before. But only on one wall. This will be on three walls all around a bath. Should I just take out the board behind the tiles or should I go higher?

Re: Tiling over tiles
take tiles off and see what the substrate is like, they may come off easily without damage...well you can always hope...and don't forget to protect the bath..

Re: Tiling over tiles
Instarmac/Ultratile have been doing some work on special addy's for this. Might be worth a chat with them. Not sure how far they have got though.

Re: Tiling over tiles
Tile on tiles not good anyway...
Try taking a tile off and if no joy substrate wise then jsut use a utility knife and score the board above the tiles then remove all in one go where the tiles are, this will prevent damaging the wall above and then just patch in as mentioned above.....
Take your time and do it right is the key..

Re: Tiling over tiles
If you try and cut corners now you will get into all sorts of bad / lazy habits. Try for a good reputation not a rogue trader one
