level enough ?
Hi Everybody,
I need some help.I am a competant diyer ( i think) and am about to lay some 600x600 porcelian tiles ( not B&q ! ).floor is tongued and grooved which i have overboarded with 12mm marine ply.I thought the floor was very level until just now,but found it dips about 1cm over a 1 metre area.Should i carry on and make up with tile cement or use self levelling,(which i dont really want to do) Is 1 cm a lot or am i worring too much ?

Re: level enough ?
Hi
Are you saying you have a dip or that the floor runs out over the length by 10mm, if, your using rapid set, and you should be on a floor then the dip can be made good with the addy, if it runs out over a longer distance then it can be done but it could work out costly if you have to build up every tile.
Hope that helps.

Re: level enough ?
On that size tile maybe you will be using a PTB adhesive anyway and they can go thicker than normal rapids that only go to around 6mm bed and can do thicker in small located area's....
On that size tile your floor wants to be like a bowling green anyway...it will make laying them a lot easier..

Re: level enough ?
firstly the overboarding really needs to be minimum 15mm ply or 6mm tile backer board chemicals in the marine ply can migrate through to the grout and discolor and seeing as its onto a timber substrate the adhesive needs to be flexible as does the grout.
seeing as you already have 12mm ply down with dips in i would lay no more ply ontop usiing a bed ofadesive to level the floor specially as you are using 600x600 porc.

Educate me on a couple of points here Dave.
I have always used a 10mm plus trowel on normal rapidsets, would you say that over a 6mm bed it wants to be a PTB addy ?
Agree about the bowling green though, it would make life soooooooooooooooooo much easier
