Thumbs up Tile Adhesive for 60cm x 60cm Floor Tile Porcelain

    Hi,

What would be the best adhesive to use for 600mm x 600mm by 10mm thick floor tiles. The floor is concrete/asphelt, it is pretty level and I intend on using self levelling compound for any uneven areas.
    Ready Mixed or Powder?
    Cheapest place to buy?

The tiles are porcelain so I may need to seal them prior laying, in fact any advice or guide to laying large format porcelain floor tiles would be really appreciated. I have layed tiles before but not this big or porcelain.

    Thanks

    Chris

    Hi,

The substrate is the same throughout and I have now confirmed it is asphelt.

I would like to use Mapei or BAL product for this job, can you recommend?

Do I need to seal prior to laying to avoid grout staining?
Do I need to seal the grout after?
What is minimum spacer size? i.e 3mm (I want small joints)
Which grout needs to be cream colour?

    Thanks

    Chris

Hi not sure what you mean. I do not know what the asphelt is on to me it looks like really dark concrete, but in parts where it was previously tiled it looks light grey in colour like normal concrete. why would the asphelt cause problems, it is pretty solid built in 1954?

I have been told that you cant tile directly on to asphelt as there is a possibility of the adhesive not bonding to the floor. However, I was talking to a rep a few months ago who said that if you sprinkle one part over the area and leave it over overnight it causes a reaction with the asphelt. In the morning hoover up the powder and you will be able to tile straight on to the asphelt without any problrms. The reaction between the powder and asphelt may not be visible but if the powder has been left on overnight it will have done its job. Our tilers have tried this and it works.
