Newbie.. Tiles dont stick even after 12hrs
Hi guys got aprob with batherroom tiles.....never tiled before.....anyway stuck tiles to wall with B&Q adhesive with grout built in too it, it did seam dry even after stirring, didnt seam to have enough moisture in it...I sealed the wall with pva like it said in the manufacturers instructions, anyway after 12hrs went to do some more tiling on another wall and some of them fell out, so with Very little work i pulled the rest off....
can someone recommend a decent adhesive to me, i was thinking about no more nails i got so with em not sticking....
i pulled the old tiles of that only had blobs of adhesive hear and there but they were on good.....the wall underneath is like concreate blocks, no plaster and i dont want to wait 2/3 weeks for new plaster to dry, i want the tiles on now.....
thank you any positive advice
jason

Re: Newbie.. Tiles dont stick even after 12hrs
hi jay, crikey me olde m8 didnt think id get a response that quick.....
Tile size = 200x250mm --- (7/78" x 9 7/8)
Thickness = 6m
Im trying (lol) to tile just about the bath, only want 2 tiles high.....the concreate blocks or so it looks, gone up about 10" then its plaster with spikey textured something, with paint on, when i removed my new tiles after 12 hrs, and scraped the adhesive of which was so easy just fell off, some of the paint came off as well like it was wet wall paper...
hope this helps....
ive still got 5 tiles up on the side wall, that i did yesterday morning and i felt the adhesive around the tile and its still soft....its like brittle

also forgot to mention in places on the concreate part its quite deep, so i had to put it on thick, the tub says no deeper than 3mm but i thought it would be ok, anyway on the plastered part of wall it was 3 mm and they still didnt stick

Re: Newbie.. Tiles dont stick even after 12hrs
Welcome to the forum, Sorry about the tiles mate, best thing to do, and you won't like it I'm afraid, but rip them all off, Soak the tiles in water to get adhesive off, clean the walls of any paint etc (especially your PVA, defininitely a non no,) go to a tile shop and buy a proper primer and a bag of 'a cement based adhesive'. (and a bag of seperate grout) Your adhesive uses air to 'cure' and applied to thickly, it just won't . Good Luck

Re: Newbie.. Tiles dont stick even after 12hrs
no i dont mind doing it all again as long as it works....i wasted awhole day on is wot im cheesed off about and all for nothing.....i read about the cement based adhesive and seperate grout is the road i was going down next.....but can you tell me will i be able to apply the cement based adhsive on THICK, as in places the depth is like maybe an inch or slightly deeper.....i dont want to muck about with plastering and waiting 3 weeks, as the wife wants the tiles on now!.......lol

Re: Newbie.. Tiles dont stick even after 12hrs
Thick as you want mate because this adhesive goes off chemically not air. If you buy a rapid adhesive, apply to the wall and get it as flat as possible, this goes off in three hours then apply your tiles. More chance of your tiles being flat if you do it this way as opposed to applying great dollops of addy onto your tile!

Re: Newbie.. Tiles dont stick even after 12hrs
Get the wall flat first, (then wait three hours) then use a notched trowel to apply a layer of addy, stick tiles on with twisting action. don't mix too much adhesive up at once, you only have half an hour of working time before you end up with a bucket of unusable adhesive. Too expensive to waste

Re: Newbie.. Tiles dont stick even after 12hrs
hang on ya lost me!.....get the wall flat first with what? after 3hrs i thought the adhesive would be dry, or are you saying use the CBA first to level the wall, wait 3hrs for it to dry, THEN...use another layer of CBA to finally stick the tiles on with!!!.......cause i dont want to apply plaster and wait 3 weeks, i want the tiles on now if i can...

Re: Newbie.. Tiles dont stick even after 12hrs
Sorry if I lost you, use the addy to get the wall flat. If the wall is reasonably flat to start with when you fix the tiles they should be reasonably flat too. If you fix the tiles onto the wall with great gollops (if thats a word)of addy then it is a bit harder to maintain the flatness because getting one tile flat is ok, then you fix tiles around that one it is going to move! So in short, No plaster reqd, use the rapid set for both patching the wall up and fixing the tiles

Re: Newbie.. Tiles dont stick even after 12hrs
Hey FH, although I'd agree your course of action is at basic level a way to do the job, I fear for the result of someone who's never even tiled before to attempt floating out a wall using f/s motar in order to get it 'flat/even/prepped'. The wife might want it all done now, but some things just do need doing sort of right, for any chance of satisfaction at the result, dontcha think?

Only told him this course of action as it is only Two tiles high! a full wall would obviously be a different matter (Re- post 3)

Re: Newbie.. Tiles dont stick even after 12hrs
if im reading the info from xerium correctly (still slightly hung over from bbq yesterday)
the concrete blocks are recessed below the level of the plaster above and the tiles are being fixed using thicker aplications of adhesive to level. if this is the case why not chase the remaining plaster wall to the height of the desired tiles and dot and dab plasterboard to level and use a good quality tubbed adhesive...bal or similiar... hope ive got the info right or im off back to bed.
