Tiling on existing tiles with Bal white
My client wants me to tile on top of his old tiles with new 250 x 350 ceramic,. The entite bathroom, I was going to use Bal White star. Will that be ok? Will I have to wait 3 days to grout?. Will the adhesive be strong enough to hold the tiles on the inside top of the window frame ie upside down. or will i have to tape it or something???
Any advise would be much appreciated..
Thanks

Re: Tiling on existing tiles with Bal white
first thing you should check is how well the existing tiles are fixed, personally i would never recommend tiling on top off tiles but it is possible, the last thing you want is your tiles hurting some1 due to the existing tiles not being fixed properly.

Re: Tiling on existing tiles with Bal white
Following on from Johns post, with which I agree with completely, if you do go ahead then although white star would do the job, you would need to probably wait at least a week before grouting, probably 2, so you would be far, far better of using a flexible cement based adhesive instead of tubbed stuff. You can grout the next day then!

I have a load of Bal rapid set felex for another job with big tiles. Would that do to tile on tiles?

Re: Tiling on existing tiles with Bal white
If the tiles are glazed( glossy) then the rapid set flex is no good...You need an S2( highly flexible) adhesive to tile to glossy tiles..
Pull them off , much easier and better alround job...

Re: Tiling on existing tiles with Bal white
I agree with Dave, it will be quicker and easier in the long run to rip them all off. If you're gonnna proceed with tiling on top then you will need to ensure that the existing tiles are securely fixed (it's your rep at the end of the day and not the original fixers now!), clean them with sugar soap, score them up with a wire brush and/or sharp blade, prime and then use a cement based S2 addy. Phew, enjoy!!

Re: Tiling on existing tiles with Bal white
Thanks guys. Now I am totally confused about what to do. It is the whole bathroom floor to ceiling. I will try and take a few tiles off and if they come off easy without taking half the wall or plasterboard aswell. Will take them off. Just pushed for time on this one and worried about having to replaster or replace plasterboard.
How heavy is a steel (not cast iron)bath would one man be able to carry or slide down stairs.

If it has plasterboard walls take the walls down with the tiles and reboard :Pete
