Tiling process - Advice needed
Hi,
I am about to prepare my bathroom floor for tiling and would apprciate some advice on the process.
I have a 22mm plywood floor which is going to be tanked with a Dura WP membrane.
Please can some advise me on the following?
1) Does the plywood need to be treated in any way before I lay the Dura WP membrane?
2) Can someone suggest a good quality fliexible adhesive that can be used to apply both the membrane and the tiles?
3) What sort of trowell should I use for the floor. (The tiles are standard floor tiles 333mm X 333mm X 8mm.)
4) Do I need to use a different trowell to apply the membrane and the tiles?
Many thanks
Chris

Re: Tiling process - Advice needed
Mapei Keraquick is a good adhesive for your application. Use a 3 or 4mm trowel to lay the adhesive for the membrane, pressing the membrane inot the adhesive with the flat edge of te trowel to ensure 100% and eliminate any air pockets and then a thick bed solid bed trowel (1/2 round notch) for the tiles. With Keraquick you do not need to prime the tiling face, however it would be advisable to seal the back edges and underside of your ply before fixing to your joists.

Thanks for the info Grumpy.
When you seal the back edges and underside of the plywood what do you mean? How do I go about doing this?
Many thanks
Chris

Depending on the adhesive you choose to use depends on the recommended product. Bal for instance recommend sealing with neat BAL Bond SBR, where as Ardex stipulate Polyurethane varnish. All you are doing effectively is "painting" on the product. The idea is to reduce or eliminate any moisture being allowed into the boards to reduce expansion/contraction as far as possible.
