I am a DIY'er and going to start a new project to tile a small downstairs toilet with polished porcelain tiles. Currently the walls are painted and floor carpeted.

Before starting, I thought I would seek some advice from the experts on this forum in relation to preparing the walls and floor plus which adhesive to use.

I would be very grateful if any of you pro's could please give me some advice on;

1. How best to prepare the painted plastered walls/concrete floor before applying adhesive
2. Which adhesive is best to use for porcelain tiles - I'd like something that will stick like sh*t to a blanket if possible!

What paint is on the walls? How thick are your porcelain tiles? There may be weight issues with a plastered wall substrate.

The walls are skimmed plaster on top of plasterboard. The plaster is painted with emulsion paint.

The porcelin tiles are 10mm thick I believe - looking at getting 600 x 300 mm ones.

I share the same concerns about the weight and that the skim plaster may come away from the walls!

The emulsion paint will need to come off, and skimmed plasterboard will not hold 10mm thick porcelain. You should really reboard with plasterboard to be within the safe working limits for those tiles.
