tiling over quarry tiles
Hi guys I have 100 year old quarry tiles in the downstairs bathroom, with no DPC or any sort of vapour barrier underneath. I'd like to tile over them with something more sleek and modern do you forsee any problems, and what would be the best prep/adhesive to use? one of my mates was on about ardoin 90, but I'm a bit clueless really cheers

Re: tiling over quarry tiles
Difficult to advise without seeing it.......
All contaminents on the tiles will have to removed....You could use an uncoupling membrane like Ditra to control moisture ( if any comes through) and create a more stable base to tile to....but this all depends on how intact the floor tiles are.....and one of that age will be suspect down to tight joints normally used back then...and laid on a floating/sand mortar bed.
Personally i would pull them up , install a dpm and screed the floor....
choice is yours..

Re: tiling over quarry tiles
Thanks dave http://www.tilersforums.co.uk/images/smilies/8.gif I really don't have the time to do it all properly, so it's a best compromise i'm looking for. The tiles are solid and level, but as you say are on a cinders/sand background. it's only about 4ft square and max loading will be my 14 stone standing on it. Any further advice for ploughing ahead with a less than perfect base?

Re: tiling over quarry tiles
OK..I would still go with the ditra method......
Firstly use something like lithofin wexa to remove any old muck or polish that might have been used...to get them clean......
Then apply a sbr and cement slurry to the surface..this will create a good bond for the adhesive used to stick the isolation membrane down.....then use an adhesive suitable for the tiles....
I think that will be your best bet.......IMO
