Was doing a screed at a 400 year old house to an extension, There was some old quarries that had to laid on an raised area of floor and was asked to lay them and all I done was wet the bottom of the tile and bedded them into the screed, That was 3-4 years ago and have never moved

me personally would just have made a cement slurry and fixed them, better grab and suction onto the screed

laid thousands of metres of it. used to lay to the line all the time until the germans introduced us to vibration tiling. thats where you screed the lot and work on the screed with plastic snow shoes. used to screed and lay 120sqm a day ( 4-5 of us) dont miss them days.

no not at all ,it is just sometimes more cost effective to tile this way and i some respects quicker you have to wait for drying times of green screeds or render

Still do it almost daily, Don't forget to soak your tiles first.

One of the 1st big contracts i worked on was a private school. That was all screeded floors and i still see the job now and again. Its still looks great, quarry tiles just seem to look better with age.

With all the modern methods why revert to the old ways of doing tiling, It's got to be refurbs because these ways of working would'nt work in modern housing, Not the way there thrown up in the uk don't know about the Australian methods of new builds

spent a month doing this at college never had the chance to do it on a job though. I was taught to lay the screed and then back butter the quarry tile.

Not too hard at college in a small bay but I reckon it would take some practice in a decent sized area lol

Can't remember last time I did any screeding, to me a Tiler fixes tiles, and a Floor screeder screeds floors.
I hope old way of Tiling isn't coming back the next thing you know chicken tiles will be back.

I have, on occasion... There's a certain charm to it, but it's very heavy work.

Hi, I do my own screed, and fix tiles or plates directly ,with Mayonaise(slurry) or comb the back with addy. The last time I had to do a bathroom in sand and cement(Walls), was 7 years ago.I have no problem with this as its part of aTilers Apprenticaship( where is the Spell Check function!?)
I`m happy using the Old and New methods as here there is a market for both!2Balls

yes and a tiler is also responsible for setting heights, screeding etc,it was ths "DONE" thing whilst serving my time, you had to do it and do it well,Ah the good old days when mosaic was`nt on sheets, and you soaked your tiles in a 45 gallon drum over night in the bleakest of winters ha ha ha
