    Default crumbling grout?

Have been reading several posts about grouting to try and get info on a problem i'm having. I tiled and grouted my kitchen floor, the grout has been down for five days but is still crumbling when i rub it- it has also dried a whitish grey rather than true grey. Its 'Ardal Grey Floor Grout' that i used.
From reading the posts one said grout will stick to the adhesive bed in the joint- but i have been scraping out all adhesive in the joints before grouting, is this wrong?
I've been told not to use ready mix so i bought a bag and mixed it myself- could i be mixing incorrectly?
I used a wash-boy to clean off grout maybe i'm wetting the surface too much- how long should i leave grout before washing off?
Can anyone give me a step by step instruction in how to grout a floor correctly? thanks

Jonty, do a search in the box at the top for "grouting" I am sure you will find lots of info and posts about how it is done.

    A guide to grouting

    Diagnosing grout failiure

Scraping out adhesive from the joints should not be a problem. In fact, it's good to do that, as the grout gets a larger surface to grip onto. Sure, the grout grips onto adhesive, but it's far more important that it grips onto the tiles, and if there's adhesive in the way, THAT might cause problems.

As for how long to wait before washing off: Do the finger test. If grout sticks to your finger when you touch it, it's too soon, simply put.

Thanks for replys- i'm tiling onto a concrete floor, but i think i know now what i'm doing wrong.

sWe- big time thanks for your grouting link i learnt alot by reading it, i'm using a cheap drill with very cheap paddle attached but have tried to run it slowly so not sure if thats my problem.
But you said if grout sticks to your finger when you touch it, its too soon to wash off- i think thats were i'm going wrong, the grout is still very wet when i begin to wash off. I use the washboy straight away and dont have a damp sponge but its wet so maybe there is too much water. Next time i will leave the grout longer before washing off and use a damp sponge.
    Thanks again
