Default Advice Please - Lath & Plaster Walls + Dodgy Floor

    Hi

I need to tile around a bath - actually 2 baths - 2x separate rooms. Both have walls which are most likely to be lath and plaster in structure. The baths are going to be set into a boxed frame that I will build. With Travertine Mosaics on the surface and the bath panel and then a small splashback area. I will also be tiling around the sink area. Same wall type.

Travertine is going to be 100x100 tumbled. To be treated with Stain Stop.

My question is - can I tile directly onto the walls? The bath splashback is only going to be 3 or 4 tiles high (so 30-40cm). Or do I need to treat the walls with anything - OR - do I need to cover the walls in something like Wedi or other?

The walls will only receive minor splashing - its not a wet room or anything, just splashes from someone getting in/out of the bath.

Floor wise - one bathroom has ancient floor boards. Which are nice and thick, but also nicely twisted (from my quick inspection). Flat enough though. I have suggested laying 18mm WBP over these. Then a devi mat - then 305x305 Travetine tiles. It raises the floor up - but he's ok with installing an oak step/slope at the doorway.

The other room is currently Chipboard. Looks like 18mm tongue and groove laid really badly. Here I've suggested taking that up - as it is not well fixed and creaks already. Then laying 18mm WBP directly to the joists, then devi mat, then the same tiles etc. Am I mad to take the existing floor up? Should I just screw it down firmer and then 18mm ply over it?

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

    Paul

Hi Paul this query slipped through the. net didn't it. This is my limited experienced take on it. If the walls are sound enough I would just prime and tile. As for the floors, is the chipboard creaking due to lack of fixings? or do the joists need strengthening? It sounds like you know what the failures could be so have a closer look and I'm sure the job will be a good 'un
