Default laminate wood floor can it be tiled over?

    Hi
I have a 40m2 to tile which is covered with a good quality wood laminate
I have tested the floor the floor has been laid professionally and there is little or no movement. Has anybody tiled over this before and if so what prep do you need to do, Prime, key?
    Regards
    Trevor.

    Hi Trevor,
Tiling over laminate floor is an absolute NO....totally unstable surface, rip it up and see what the proper floor is beneath .....Gaz

As the man says a big No, take it to the car boot sale, or bonfire nights coming.

    Trevor,
Laminate flooring , is just sat on top of the original floor usually on top of either fibre boards or foam underlay. This becomes effectively a floating floor, the movement encountered is well in excess of any adhesive and grout on the market and the slightest bit of moisture that penetrates will blow the surface therefore de-bonding your tiles on top. Once you take a section of the laminate up you will find it simple to just unclick and if in good condition re-use it elsewhere......Gaz

    Gaz,
I needed to know for my own peace of mind I suspected that this was the reason but needed it confirming.

I am so glad I use this site there is such a vast amount on knowledge to tap into and it's guy's like you that makes all the difference.

It's not the first and won't be the last question that seems to have an obvious answer but if I can't find it in the forum no matter how stupid the question I will ask it rather than second guess.

    Thanks again Gaz,

    such a great site!

    Regards Trevor.

Thanks for the kind words Trevor.
The only stupid question is the one which isn't asked. The purpose of the forum is to avoid certain problems, rather than try to deal with them afterwards when it's too late......Gaz
