Re: adhesive for sound proofing boards
dont tile on these boards get the buider to remove them and change the tiled areas for a foam cement backer board like dukka wedi or marmox then use a rubber 2 part adhesive and you will have a sound proof tiled floor, the bounce in your sound proof boards will cause a failure due to movement

Re: adhesive for sound proofing boards

Hi Rossy
Hope this helps
SUBSTRATE CONSIDERATIONS
The floating timber floor should be carefully examined prior to tiling to ensure that it can carry the additional dead load without excessive deflection. The following extract from Section 14.4 of BS 5385 Part 3 1989 is relevant.
“New timber bases should be designed not merely to carry the additional load, but also to provide a stiff floor. The limit of deflection permitted in BS 5268 “Structural Use of Timber” may be too great to avoid damage to a rigid finish and its bedding,”
Therefore the main considerations for the fixing of ceramic floor tiles to a floating floor are:-
1. The concrete substrate must be of an even finish with no localised raised areas, as these may cause uneven compression of the resilient layer
2. The tongue and groove joints of the flooring grade chipboard must be fully located and bonded with a high quality wood adhesive.
3. The timber floor receiving the tiled surface must be stable and free from any deflection and able to receive a rigid floor tile.
4. The timber layer must be clean and free from any dirt dust or any layer that may inhibit the adhesive from bonding to the surface.
5. Any junctions between adjacent boards must in all cases be supported underneath. e.g. butt-jointed edges.
Where the floor is deemed to be unstable it may be stiffened by:-
1. Overlaying the existing board with a minimum thickness of 15mm water-resistant plywood laid with staggered joints.
2. Battens may be used to support the boards at a maximum of 300mm centres, having first secured the battens to the base structure.
FIXING OF TILES
Tiles may be fixed directly to a stable timber floor in a solid bed of BAL-FASTFLEX adhesive keeping the final bed thickness to the minimum that the tile and floor will allow, ideally 3-4mm thick.

Re: adhesive for sound proofing boards

Re: adhesive for sound proofing boards
That is all well bal tas 2 if a floating floor is free from deflection...i haven't come across one yet though......As for overboarding...this won't work if the deflection is around the perimeter of the room as well as the rest of the floor as the overlay will just move with the sub-floor , hence debonding will occur or at very least the joints will give resulting in a failure...I know that fasflex will stick the tiles no problem but its the strength of the joints that will give up...or if stone is used then the tiles themselves....
There is more to consider than just controling the timber deflection....floating floors are generaly laid upon polystyrene base ( kingspan is one make) and this is where you can't control the deflection as this compresses/flex's as well....IMO floating floors should NOT be tiled.....and i for one IMO know that if a floating floor failed whilst using fastflex or any other 2 part adhesive then the manufactuerer would not stand by any gaurentee....

looks like laminate will be going down then the developer will not gamble on it if any doubts...
