NO!!!! they don't..
Some cement boards ..i.e hardi backer just need a wipe with a damp sponge first.......and which doofus as you put it told you this...?..

No primer required!!!!!.......just make sure the boards are clean........

CTD will give you upto 34% discount once you use them regulary....but as for products...I tend to use BAL mostly on the adheive and grout side ....Hardi backer boards..( which newcastle now stock)..
I use Ardex k15 or Arditex ( latex ) levellers...
Sealers/cleaners.. i use Lithofin products
etc etc.........

You can get some good prices on Mapei...maybe it is his main supplier...either way it is a good brand....
