I know that sheet linoleum is not a good substrate, and i appreciate your concern, but i just really don't want to go through the hassle of ripping it up. I had a guy put ceramic over linoleum in my bathroom years ago and haven't had any problems. I'm just wondering if there is a certain type of adhesive that holds better to linoleum.

Wally, if you are sure to not lift the lino then make sure it is well stuck to the subfloor.
As above id bit the bullet and invest a day lifting it, put a self levelling compound over the residual goo on the floor and a good surface to tile off. Good luck anyway.

Ditto what has been said. Remove the lino, if you the budget will stretch then hire a machine http://www.hss.com/g/58411/Floor-Tile-Stripper.html

Are you saying that the self levelling compound would be a good substrate, or would I have to put something over that?

I've tiled over lino in the past with no problems. If you can remove it then you're better doing that, but some of it is stuck very well.

Flexible rapidset on a primed floor, done several over the years and never heard of anything lifting.
