Default Tiling onto chipboard flooring

Hi all, I have been asked to tile the floors in a new build house, the customer wants me to tile directly onto the chipboard, I have done this before using an acrylic primer and Granfix ultimate flex adhesive and grout, all seems to be ok.

This floor has an area of about 30m2 and the tiles are 600mm sq black porcelane, is the same adhesive etc ok or should I us something else.
john

Hi Gaz, I quoted to use 6mm ply on the 30m2 floor.
Im'e in the north of Scotland and can't always get the materials available down south, the other floors amount to 20m2 spread over 1 x ensuites and 2 x bathrooms, is ply ok with the porcelain on the 30m2 floor, I think I will tile onto the chipboard in the others.

BAL Prime APD
A modified acrylic polymer dispersion for use as a primer for a variety of backgrounds/bases prior to fixing ceramic tiles, mosaics and natural stone and prior to the application of levelling compound and the BAL WP1 TANKING SYSTEM. BAL PRIME APD isolates products containing calcium sulphate such as gypsum plaster and anhydrite screeds from cement-based adhesives, thus minimising the risk of reaction between the two materials.

Also suitable for use on cement:sand rendering, blockwork, plasterboard, cement:sand screeds and timber. It also provides surface strength to friable surfaces and reduces the porosity of porous backgrounds/bases, thus preventing the formation of air bubbles and prolonging the flow time with levelling compounds and extending the open time of tile adhesives. The primer is blue in colour to help ensure that a complete and even coating is obtained.
BAL Fastflex Powder & Liquid
A two part, rapid-setting, sulphate-resistant, water-resistant and frost-resistant floor tile adhesive and isolating, anti-fracture underlay, suitable for use in interior and exterior locations. Suitable for fixing ceramic floor and porcelain tiles and mosaics (including fully vitrified), dark natural stone and slate. Suitable for use on tile backer boards, glazed tiles, concrete bases, cement:sand screeds, tongue & groove floorboarding, plywood overlay, floating plywood/chipboard floors, ceramic/quarry tile/terrazzo/hard natural stone bases, vinyl tiles/sheet, mastic asphalt, steel, glass reinforced polyester (GRP), steel and galvanised steel. Conform
BAL Wide Joint Grout
A water-resistant, frost-resistant cement-based powder grout designed for grouting ceramic floor tiles, mosaics, quarries etc. Also suitable for use on walls. Not recommended for soft glazed wall tiles, or tiles with metal decor or lustre. Suitable for use in interior and exterior locations in both wet and dry conditions. Suitable for swimming pools. Conforms to BS EN 13888, Type C, Class G1.

NOTE: The physical properties of BAL WIDE JOINT GROUT can be enhanced by the addition of BAL ADMIX GT1. The polymer admixture imparts flexibility, increases adhesion and reduces the water permeability thus widening the application possibilities of the grout, with a classification of BS EN 13888, Type C, Class G2.
BAL Admix GT1
A polymer additive for BAL cement-based grouts. Not for use with adhesives. The addition of BAL ADMIX GT1 greatly improves the physical properties and characteristics of the grout.

• Increased mechanical strength.
• Increased flexural strength and flexibility.
• Reduced water permeability.

s to BS EN 12004, Type C, Class 1F.

Hi, Do you find backer board is any better than ply, it is more expensive.

Wink Re: Tiling onto chipboard flooring

i would overlay the chipboard with ply first.
the chipboard used on new build houses is treated . there for the adhesive doesent take. i work for a large tiling company , working on new build housing.
and we were instructed not to tile on to the chipboard.
if you look closely at the chipboard , and it as a shine on the surface it as been treated . we have tiled on to them before we knew about the treatment .
useing mapai &latex + fugolastic in the grout , and on one occasion one of the floors started to lift.
just be carefull
