Hi,

I have a small kitchen to do, they are small porc' tiles. Is there a tub adhesive I can safely use for this, seems like a pain to be mixing up cement on this one. They're about 4 inch square.

BAL White Star or Ardex D20 or D30 would be fine.

Bal told me no for white star on porcelain and glass. You may get away with it with small tiles but they don't recommend it. I didn't fully understand why as I would have thought applying adhesive to a plaster wall would be similar as far as water leaving the tubbed adhesive goes to overtiling a glazed tile.

its actually to do with the porcelain tile m8,thats why you get porcel bond adhesive because the tub gear does not adhere to the porcelain very well,hope this helps you understand a bit more.

on a more technical note,its because porcelain is of very low porosity and puts more demands on the adhesive.

Apologies to all for the error in my earlier post White star isn't classed as suitable in the BAL literature. ironically they do say it can be used on impervious backgrounds though!

Is porcelain not an "impervious" substance?

I WAS correct about Ardex D20 and D30 though as long as the background is absorbant.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your input, I understand the necessity for porcelbond and the added adhesion it gives in products like bal SPF. However having thought about an overtiling situation on a glazed tile then white star is speced for this. I think that is the point grumpy is also trying to make. Bal stated that it shouldn't be used due to the water leaving the adhesive a bit like why you wouldn't use certain tubbed adhesive on larger tiles. Still can't get my head round the difference between adhesion to a glazed ceramic in an overtile situation and a fully vitrified tile onto a plaster background. I will stick to what i normally use for porcelain bagged with an admix.

If you are tiling with small mosaic type tiles which are Glass or porcelain based ( both bieng a vitrified tile) then white star will be fine ..
It is basicly when using larger vitrified tiles that it won't be strong enough to hold them..that's when a flexi/porcelbond adhesive comes in....
White star is a highly flexible dispersion adhesive , but not all dispersion adhesives are.. so if in doubt use a cement based flexi/porcelbond one....
