aquapanel onto floorboards

Hi All

I`m about to tile my bathroom floor, the floorboards are in pretty good nick and flat apart from a couple of small 1inch gaps near the edge. I was originally going to put down some 6mm plywood and then aquapanel but I`m thinking is it ok just to put the aquapanel straight down onto the floorboards with a bed of adhesive and then screwed down.

Why aqua panel you could simply 6mm ply it whats going on top, we'r talking 6x1 boards ye ?

I suggest using 6mm Hardiebacker boards. They are water resistant. Simply fix onto a thin bed of ashesive to fill any voids through uneven floorboards and screw every 200 centres.

No need to prime either!

Decided on aquapanel just to be safe in case of any water leaking through.
I`ve bought it now so too late to go back to the plasterboard idea.

These are the panels I bought

These are insulating boards designed for insulating under floor heating. Are you trying to add strength to the floor or just give a good surface to tile onto?

Well I hope you bought the water resistant version not the ones in the link although both will need waterproofing properly to be sound

If the aquapanel was going into a wet room then a waterproof membrane should be installed but for a normal bathroom floor I can't see any requirement. The aquapanel will be fine if screwed onto an adhesive bed, not so sure about the aquapanel thermal though if that is what you have purchased.

Thanks, yeah think i`ve made a mistake getting the thermal type. I`ll get that changed. Its also not for a wet room, just a standard bath which wont have a shower, just an attachment. Although there wont be a screen so I expect water on the floor occasionally.

So would either hardibacker 6mm screwed down to the floorboards be ok, or does it need a adhesive down too? btw i`m using ceramic tiles on top.

If ti is just to put a "nice" surface down to tile onto, then 6mm hardie is fine, you will need to lay it onto adhesive first and then screw down. Check the hardie site for install instructions, they should be on there.

if you are after strenghtening the floor then you need to be looking at a min of 15mm ply, usually 18mm as 15mm does not seem to be available here.

Andy, can you confirm which type of adhesive is suitable to bed the boards, and which to fix tiles with when using 6mm boards fixed down in this method ....Gaz

Thanks for that.
Can i just check , should I put down some 6mm ply first then the hardibacker or could I put the hardibacker straight down onto the existing floorboards (with screws & adhesive).
Would prefer not to use ply as that add to the height of the floor.
