Default Tiling onto an exsisting wetroom floor

A lad I know is looking to put an offer for a house he's seen, and if he gets it he's going to tile the bathroom walls and floor himself "he's never touched a tile in his life" but he says he can't afford to pay anyone anything to do it for him.

Anyway, this bathrooms a wetroom, like an NHS fitted one for an old or infirm person, and this lads planning on tiling over the "rubber like matting" that make up the wetroom floor.

First off, what material are these floors normally made from, as I have no experiance with them, only ever quoted to tile walls in a wetroom like this, so the flooring never came into it, so is this floor surface something you could tile onto or not, as my first impression would be to rip the lot out and board propperly then tile, but that would not be an option for him for expense reasons.

Thanks

I tile these type of rooms all the time adam and the contractor i do them for has ALTRO flooring put down....basically it is a hard wearing non-slip vinyl........I would rip it up mate........not recommended to tile on it........plus it will also or should have a pre-formed tray underneath....you could use this tray to your advantage if incorporated with a tanking membrane etc......

Thanks for the reply Dave, but this lads planning on tiling it no matter what really.

I told him I didn't think it was a good idea to tile onto but I'd find out what the crack is with the flooring and if it was at all possible then what to use for best results.

His problem is he's looking at buying a house for the first time, but has no money really for anything, no savings to use for anything, so he's looking at DIY central really.

I know it's a situation you wouldn't work with yourself, but for a lad like this, who's only going to have just enough dollar for tiles and addy n grout, what would work the best, if there was a best way at all

I did say I would lend him the kit to do the job with if needed, though I may advise knocking the price down due to the work needed to turn the bathroom away from looking like an NHS bog
