Hi,

I've been reading everything here on tanking which is very useful. however, do the same rules apply to a tiled shower which will also be used as a bath, ie have 200 litres of water sat there for an hour?

I've been talked into making this for a client in a 1st floor appartment with a joist/wood floor.

-The slate tiles can be cut to size for our convenience

-I have prepped in grp in the past

-Didn't want to use weighty concrete, would prefer plywood frame

I have looked for info or examples, but it seems as though people use premade tubs or cast them in concrete. I need to move on this soon as the job is well under way, so any help/links/stories at all would be much appreciated.

You are asking if you can make/construct a bath with a shower over it in a room with wooden floor and make it water tight YES / NO ??

Obviously I need to seal everything to hold water, but I wondered if I could use the same products and methods as in normal shower tanking. Would there be more creep from a bath, Is there a more appropriate way of doing it to eliminate pooling, better grouts (resin based?)etc

Yes, over normal joists in a big old storage warehouse flat. Stone masons have offered to take responsibility of waterproofing using 7 huge pieces of slate, resin jointed in corners (£4K).

I was thinking of tanking and using same slate tiles as walls will be, 600 by 600 by 12, on a plywood and fibre glass frame. Maybe get them to make the dished base stone in one piece. Wondered if there were any quicker or better ways, or stories of similar craziness, (its not too late to make normal tiled box for drop-in enameled bath).

Am I right in thinking that the membrane, corner pieces and jointing tape is only good for water like you get in showers constantly running off the tiles?

Yes, a bath framed in ply with some means of tanking, such as fibreglass on plywood tiled in same as walls will be (600*600*12mm).

Stone masons have offered to take responsibility by lining ply frame in 7 huge slate pieces for £4k, (its not too late to make tiled box for drop-in enamelled bath as compromise).

I wondered if there were any quicker or better materials than fibre glass...

Ok I would

Make up a frame the size you need with 2x2 timber at 450mm centers, screw 18mm ply to floor walls top at 150mm centres all corners bonded with dow corning silicone or polyurethane glue. Leave to harden off.

Measure and cut Durabase flexible tape and fix to all corners, Measure and cut Durabase WP membrane to cover all surfaces and fix.

Leave to completely dry for a couple of days before tiling and grouting with a flexible adhesive and flexible/epoxy grout

This should be all you require
