Bit of a petty statement.....Which systems are you comparing it with?

Anyhow when I was pricing up I found that the price was competitive and all the items contained in the aquaproof tanking kit are also available iseparately something other wetroom tanking suppliers do not offer.

Hi I am about to tile a walk through shower with plasterboard walls. what tanking method would be best suited. Is the homelux matting a bit OTT.

No mention here of Wedi? I've done 2 wetrooms and my own shower cubicle using their products, they are excellent. Especially the pre-formed shower trays.

Surely Wedi is both? Its more than just a tile backer board - when used with its waterproof tape over the joints, its a full tanking solution, hence why I use it in wetrooms.

Or do you mean that the products listed in this thread are even more effective, i.e. they are virtually swimming pool level? Reason I ask, is that I fell into using Wedi board, but would be interested if there is a better solution or other solutions. I trust the wedi stuff, because I've used it (and its german I think), no other reason.

as ever - I'm confused

If you have time, could you explain better. Because I thought that tanking was something you did to stop damp getting into cellars etc. - I presume a membrane might do a similar job. However, in the context of tiling - I presumed that tanking/membranes would be used for making showers or wetrooms (keeping the water in - not out). Hence, why I thought Wedi belonged in the list. But perhaps I have not considered some other use for the tanking/membranes etc. that are listed and I'd like to learn more.

Is there a distinction between membranes and decoupling membranes? (or do all membranes provide decoupling, i.e. overcome slight movements in the substrate they are installed on- particularly wood)
If so which on the list are actually decoupling?

Noble TS membrane and Noble Chloraloy pan liner.
Mapei HPG liquid.
Redguard liquid.
Laticrete Hydroban liquid.
not on the list, maybe not available in the UK.

A point to note, notwithstanding the existing codes, plaster/gypsum of any kind is not acceptable as a substrate in wet areas as it is food for mold and will create toxic mold cultures in those areas eventually in spite of all you do to prevent it.
The way to avoid black mold death is to not give it food in the first place.
Use concrete backer or better yet MgO backer board as it provides no food for mold at all.

Alberta. This Mgo board you talk of, I can find very little about it in this country. can you provide any info. Has it been tested and approved for tile fixing?

So you're saying if you fully waterproof a plasterboard wall, there is still a chance mold will grow through? I've never seen it myself.

Every job I have taken apart (which I try to avoid) I have found black mold.
sometimes it is minimal, but water vapor is invasive and if it can't find a front door it will find a back door.
The point of what I am saying is why take a chance when there are better materials.
As for the MgO board just google search Dragonboard as they are the leader in the field, or search MgO board or magnesiacore.com is an informative site.
