Question Tanking when the shower floor area in an irregular shape

I intend to construct a wet floor but in order to maximise the floor space and hence elbow room etc the base will go into a recess beside the chimney breast. If that makes sense or put more simply the shower tray will be L shaped. Obviously I need to construct some kind of base and then tank it with a product, I cannot use an off the shelf square/rectangular tray.

Does anyone have any suggestions of which product I could use?

Thanks

Wayne

You can use wedi board to construct any shape you want and it is water proof..

Thanks, had a look at the link. It doesn't seem entirely clear how your fit the waste through the board and create the "shower tray" area? Any clues please? Also are there any other products, for instance could I form a bespoke tray in situ from a cementious product?

Thanks

Wayne

Look at the Impey Aquadeck tray formers, you set them into the floor and then tank and tile over. If you can use one for the "main" area of your floor you can then extend out from it for the rest, obviously maintaining the fall to the drain. They are supplied with a waste/drain fitting and Impey also supply a membrane system for the tanking.

Hope this helps.

PS I have constructed wet floors "in situ" before and a preformed tray is much quicker and easier and , in my opinion a better job, but obviously its more expensive

Construct the shape you want out of 3 x 3 and use ply to create the falls to the drain. Stick the trap in as you would normally and then tank the lot a few times.

But wont that raise the tray of off the floor ? If he wants a wet floor the tray needs to be flush with the floor.

Smile Re: Tanking when the shower floor area in an irregular shape

Thanks for all your replies guys. Its really helpful and generous of you all.

I am doing a fibreglass roof and fancy using the same techniques for the shower. I appreciate the posting about using 3x3 (I have 3x2) and plywood. This in fact would work quite well since the whole area of the shower is up on a raised level of the bathroom.

I am still a little unclear about the waste situation though.

What I intend to do is create a flat shower tray with a slight incline to the back edge where a I intend to put a slightly lower ledge in that will act as a gutter. At one end or indeed the middle of this gutter (if I incline it to the middle) I will insert a waste. But standard bath wastes are shaped to fit into the indentation in the bath. So do you fit the underside of the plugless waste and fibreglass over it leaving a hole in the middle/ cut it out afterwards, then fit the top grill once its dry? Would that produce a waterproof seal?

Thanks again fellas

Wayne

To be fair you are asking us to advise on :

1. a setup we can not see
2. a diy tray project

Any recognised person on this forum can not possibly advise you as it is outside of good practice.

To help you I would sugest you forget a shower trap and get a wet room gulley / drain from a recognised manufacturer. While researching which drain you can browse through their installation drawings and get a better idea of how they are fixed in-situ........

Hope this goes at lease some way to helping you.

cheers

tiler
