wet behind the ears... | | We are replacing both our main bathroom and en suite in a couple of weeks (we hope!!) - both at the same time. Both will have a shower - an electric shower (not power shower) over the bath in the main bathroom and a mixer shower over a 1700x700 stone resin tray in the en suite. We are going for natural stone (not ceramic) tiles on the walls in both rooms (we have wooden floors throughout and are retaining these in both rooms). We are getting slightly conflicting advice from a number of quarters, namely about the prep needed for the walls. Seems that tanking is the best option for the en suite (which only has the shower). But can someone give me a steer on these points:
* it seems tanking means different things to different people - we have been advised to use Webi board (correct spelling?!), but I am not sure what (if anything) is needed to seal between the boards/corners etc and if a tanking kit is needed in addition to the boards? We have heard about membranes, rubberised solutions etc and are getting a bit confused
* should we be doing a similar amount of prep to the main bathroom (shower over the bath) - in other words boarding, tanking etc?
* we intend to seal the tiles before fixing them, then again before grouting them and finally after grouting. Is it possible to over-seal the tiles? And we have been advised to do this to make sure the tiles don't pick up grime prior to fixing them - should we be cleaning them in any way before the applying the first lot of sealant? |
