Default Wetroom novice needs help

I have four bathrooms to quote for this week, with three having wet room type showers. They are all on wood floor and show no proper tanking (durabase / homelux matting), just Wediboard tilebacker and ply. Plumbers are installing UFH in three of the rooms. Having never installed tiles in a wetroom before, I need some advice from the experts!

What do I need to consider when fitting above the UFH? (I know about the when to switch on stuff, but what bonding / thickness / matting etc?)

What adhesive and grout would you recommend?

How would you approach the builder to ensure the shower tray former is in place (nothing shown in drawings and no response to my first question of what tray are they using)?

I believe the whole rooms need tanking with matting on top of the wediboards / ply...is this right?

I may have other questions, but its late and I'm old and tired!

Cheers,

Chris

No disrespect, but if your so unsure about wetrooms, and we all know how difficult they can be.
Why are you taking them on?

For the UFH- self level and then tile the area using MAPEI Ultramastic111 and flexi grout.

Tanking use either a membrane from schluter, who have a link at the top of this page or use BAL WP1 KITS.

Because I am confident I can do it, i just want to make sure I have everything right in my mind first before quoting. Got to start somewhere...How do you gain experience without doing it??? If you dont challenge / push yourself, you'll never get better Some may say this is naive or cocky, but I want to have a go at doing a wetroom so dont want to walk away when I get an opportunity...make sense?

If you use a Wedi preformed tray - then build up the surrounding area in Wedi board. Tape all the joints, using wedi waterproof tape, then seal them and stick the tape using tile adhesive (I use howtex stuff, but have used ardex as well - you just need something fully flexible for the u/f heating and fully waterproof as well).

You then get a perfect floor with a tray shaped with the fall. Very easy to tile (in my experience).

u/f heating - I always use Devimats (as I consider them the best I've seen) they are approx 4-6mm once they are covered. But easy to install. Last one I did, I used tile adhesive to cover it - as using self levelling, wouldn't exactly be a good idea on a sloped tray

The wedi tray is 40mm thick. So the surround area needs building up by the amount. Last one I did on a wooden floor, I simply used 40mm all around the edges to match, then made a lip at the door entrance, to create a small swimming pool effect, so that I didn't get any spill out of the door (the room was quite small).

Paul

PS - I have no experience of other tanking solutions - but have used Wedi 3 times now - and love it. Its very effective and well thought out. Only downside is its bulk, that you have to raise floors, and increase walls by applying a good layer to them as well. I like the 12mm stuff, as its easier to level out the walls that way.
