Question Wetroom virgin seeks advice (GSOH)

I am creating a wet room shower room and have a waterproof marmox shaped tray base and aquapanel on the walls. I'm confused about whether I need a membrane between the marmox base and tile finish and under the tiles in the rest of the bathroom, which has wooden flooring.

I want to make sure that I don't end up ripping up anything if it isn't sealed properly. I have looked up membranes on the internet and there seem to be so many different types and prices. WOP and Homelux seem to crop up a bit and are around £60 for 5m2. Is this the right stuff to use and do I need to dress it up the walls around the edges as well.

With the flooring I have been advised by the tile supplier (not TOPPS..!!) to use BAL Fastflex 2 part adhesive but this seems very expensive.

Also, any recommendations for a floor drain. I have a depth of around 120mm under the floor to play with.

Any advice welcome...!!!

Thanks

The Marmox board has low compressive strength and its not very strong so it will need under boarding for support and a membrane over its surface.

As it’s a wood floor the Durabase CI membrane will waterproof the former and act as an uncoupling membrane over the wood preventing any lateral cracking from expansion.

The walls if not already boarded I would leave as plaster board and tank with Durabase WP membrane which comes on a roll. If already boarded then the boards will need taping together and to the floor membrane so prevent water ingress. The first option being the cheapest and most secure as WP and CI work hand in hand.

You should have been supplied with a drain when you bought the former.

If you haven’t yet got the former etc email me and I will talk you through it or have a look at the site.

Thanks for the advice wetdec.

I have boarded under the marmox former (and have the drain.....I missed it..!!).

With the membrane, the durabase one is 3mm thick which, when bedded in adhesive and then with more adhesive and tiles on top will make my floor around 20-25mm higher. I didn't really want this much difference in height as it will mean a step into the room. The shower part of the room will have doors so the rest of the bathroom won't need to be a "full" wet room if you see what I mean.

Is there an alternative which won't be so thick. I have seen membranes which say they are only 0.15mm thick (WOP I think it was, or maybe Homelux??).

I already have aquapanel waterproof boards on the walls of the shower area. Presumably joints will need to be sealed with waterproof tape and the junction with the floor.

Thanks

Hi

If you want to use a thinner membrane then use Durabase WP it will do the same job as WOP but I would recommend you use Durabase CI as this will waterproof and uncouple your floor so preventing cracking from the latteral movement of the boards.

You seem to of jumped around from system to system, Marmox insulation board former, Aquapanel substrate boards, Durabase W0P Homelux, is there a reason for this ?.............confused

I guess it does seem like I have jumped about. When I first started to refurb my bathroom I knew some of what I needed (eg aquapanel boards) so didn't investigate complete "systems".

Thanks
