Profiling on stone
After having a look at the JOTM entries by Spanish and Daz I'd like to know what is the best tool or attachment to achieve this look? I always leave my trav with a square edge or a mitre but really like this look and want to have a go next time I get a chance. Also is it best to do the profiling before the fitting or do it as a job lot at the end? Thanks, Bri.

Re: Profiling on stone
Dave was going to get a consignment in and give us all a profiling cutter to trial.

Re: Profiling on stone
before fitting bri profiling and polishing is always best as after fitting can cause problems with the polisher marking the flat surface of the field tile

Re: Profiling on stone
As per Gary, I did all the profiling and polishing prior to fitting Bri.
I used a variable speed grinder with a stone routing bit and diamond polishing pads. I'll try and get a few pics over the next few days mate.

Ditto! I now am going to invest in some profiling tools !!! Got some steps to do in Travertine soon and the tools will be ideal for bullnosing edges

Re: Profiling on stone
It's good to know that JOTM can inspire so many.
I really enjoyed my job and the profiling is what sets it, and me, apart from all other travertine jobs local to me.
My advise if you intend to purchase profilers, is to spend a lot of time practicing on off-cuts so that you have your technique sorted prior to offering the service to your clients.

Re: Profiling on stone
I won the Feb 2010 JOTM with a curved marble staircase which i bullnosed fully by hand !!
Beautiful work to do, i have made dozens of windowboards and corner shelves etc using the profiling wheel.
Superb invention.
Only last week i tiled a display for Armatile and had to make 2 corner shelves for it.

Re: Profiling on stone
If someone could point me in the right direction for the right bits/tools I would be very grateful, like I said it's not something I've done yet and I'd love to learn. Got a load of spare trav in the garage that is perfect for practicing. Some pics would be ace, progress ones as well as the finished article.

Re: Profiling on stone
I got mine from Stonetools (expensive but long lasting), however there are loads of companies that sell profiling bits. Just do an internet search and you will find loads of options.

I really want/need profiling bits/wheels. Let's make mitring and butt jointing natural stone a thing of the past

Re: Profiling on stone
My Mates a Stonemason, Stone tools is where he gets his bits & bobs, and he even lets me use them in his workshop top bloke, going up next week to bullnose some Travertine.
Makes such a diffrence to a job rather than Manky trim, mitres or butting, thats if the punter is willing to pay the extra.
P.VC. trim should be banned then nobody could pick it

Re: Profiling on stone
get your self a variable speed grinder, a selection of abrasive discs and backing pads (dry use)
If you have a fein then the stone polishing pad set is worth having. (the felt pad is very usefull)
with this kit you can produce a quarter quadrant radius as shown in my jotm entry.
for a full bull nose you need the grinder bit in the variable speed grinder.
after that its just time and practice.
if Dave wanted I would be willing to help him do a bit of a training half day at a venue near us

That would be very kind of you Spanish, no better way to learn than watching a demonstration, then having a go. (and ruining some lovely stone!)

Re: Profiling on stone
I've had a look through all the links for tools and attachments that people have kindly posted on this thread and to be honest I'm a bit confused as to what is the best option and what would be a fair price to pay, so a demonstration/training event would be just the ticket to not only learn how to achieve this look but, also what to achieve it with.
